NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team was able to take two games today from Stonehill in their home opener from Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.
SCSU took game one, 5-2, and then won game two, 7-1, to open up in the Northeast-10 Conference.
In game one, the Owls trailed 1-0 before scoring five runs in two innings.
The Owls (5-5) scored three runs in the third inning when
Kristin Whitley (N. Andover, Mass.) made it 2-1 with a two-run single and then Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calf.) had an RBI single to make it 3-1.
SCSU scored two more runs in the fourth inning when
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) had an RBI doubel to make it 4-1, and
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) made it 5-1 with an RBI single.
Buch and Muscarella each had two hits for SCSU. Nicole Eisenmann led Stonehill (4-10) going 2-for-3 with two hits and a run scored.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) got the win with a complete game seven innings while allowing two earned runs on seven hits with four walks and three strikeouts.
In game two, the Owls scored three runs in the second inning. Muscarella made it 1-0 with an RBI single,
Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) had an RBI ground out and then Muscarella scored on a wild pitch.
In the fifth, the Owls were able to put the game away with three runs led by a two-run home run from
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) to make it 5-0.
Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) got the win with a complete game of seven innings and allowing one earned run on five hits with two walks and nine strikeouts.
