Yerina Leads Owls In Split Against Assumption

Yerina picked up his fourth win of the year in a split at Assumption.

WORCESTER, Mass. – Senior Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) picked up his fourth win of the year, tossing a complete game shutout for the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team as they defeated Assumption in game one of a doubleheader on Sunday, 9-0.
 
Yerina struck out six and threw 8.2 perfect innings, eventually allowing a base hit in the bottom of the eighth inning, while striking out six in the win. 
 
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) recorded his first home run of the year to get the Owls on the board in the top of the first inning with a solo shot off Greyhounds starter Keith Landers, who allowed four runs over 3.1 innings of work.
 
The Owls would pick up three runs in the second inning on four hits. With the bases loaded, Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.) would reach on an infield single to drive in T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.). Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) would also get an RBI on an infield single and the Owls would lead 4-0 after two.
 
In the top of the seventh, the Owls would tack on three more. After Cleary and Baviello reached on errors by Assumption and Kiernan was intentionally walked, T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.) would add the Owls lead. Shea would single through the right side to give the Owls a 6-0 lead. Southern would add more in the inning to lead 7-0 after seven.
 
Cleary would pick up his second and third RBI of the day in the eighth, driving in Baviello and Burns. Joe Breen (Nashua, N.H.) would add one more for the Owls in the top half of the ninth and they would go on to win, 9-0.
 
Six Owls had a pair of hits in the first game, totaling 14 in the win.
 
The Owls fell in game two 8-2 and leave Worcester with a 10-5 mark overall.
 
The Greyhounds would strike in the second inning with a run and then again in the third, tacking on 5 runs, including a Shane Keddy solo shot to left field.
 
Rocco Cundari (Norwalk, Conn.) was unable to get past the third inning after giving up six runs (three earned), while walking four.  
 
Breen picked up an RBI in the fourth inning to cut Assumption's lead to five. However, Assumption would add another in the bottom of the fourth and then one more in the sixth on their way to a 8-2 win.
 
Mike Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.), Will Meade (Orange, Conn.) and Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) would pitch five innings for the Owls out of the bullpen, allowing two runs and four hits.
 
Baviello picked up two more hits in the second game, tallying four on the day.
 
The Owls will be back in action for the home opener against Bridgeport on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. from the Ballpark at SCSU.
