NEW HAVEN, Conn.  – Junior Rocco Cundari (Norwalk, Conn.) pitched seven shutout innings for the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team, in a 1-0 effort over Bentley in game one of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

The Owls would only squander one run in the game and it would come on a Falcons mistake in the bottom of the sixth inning. Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) would lead off the inning with a single and would move up on a Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) sacrifice bunt. A.J. Rouleau (Westborough, Mass.) would then hit a fly ball to left that would be dropped and Baviello would score from second to give the Owls a 1-0 lead, which would prove to be the difference.

Cundari would allow six hits and strike out nine in way to his fourth win of the year. Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) would come on in the eighth and pitch two scoreless innings to pick up the save.

In the second game of the doubleheader, the Owls would again get great pitching, this time from sophomore Cole Bryant (Newington, Conn.). Bryant would only allow four hits over eight innings and strike out seven to earn his second victory of the year in a 2-0 Southern Connecticut win, sweeping away the Falcons.

The Owls would get on the board in the fifth inning off Bentley's starter, John Yohe. It would be Baviello again that would start the rally with a one-out single to right field. Cleary would follow with a double over the right fielders head and would advance Baviello to third. Rouleau would then again be at the plate with an opportunity to drive in runs. He delivered a two-RBI single to left and the Owls would take a 2-0 lead.

That's all Bryant would need and he would eventually give way to Egan who would come in and shut the door on the Falcons again. Egan would pick up his fourth save of the year and second of the day, setting down Bentley in order in the ninth.

Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.) picked up three hits on the afternoon and Baviello had a pair of runs in the doubleheader. Rouleau picked up two hits and two RBI to lead Southern Connecticut.

The Owls improve to 12-5 on the season, while Bentley falls to 7-12.

Southern Connecticut will be back in action Wednesday when they travel to Adelphi for a 3:30 p.m. start.
