Softball Sweeps Saint Anselm, 4-0 and 4-3

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) had a game-winning hit today as the Southern Connecticut State University softball team swept Saint Anselm, 4-0 and 4-3, at Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.

In game one, Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Conn.) led the Owls to the game one victory. Cockrill got the win going a complete game of 7.0 innings while allowing no runs on seven hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

The Owls (11-6) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning with an RBI double from Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) and scoring Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.).

SCSU then scored three runs in the sixth inning with RBI singles from Stacy Pouliot (Ledyard, Conn.), Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) and Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.).

Kristin Whitley (N. Andover, Mass.) also broke the all-time hits record at SCSU, now at 220 hits, with a double in the third inning. Whitley went 1-for-3 in game one.

In game two, Bucko had the game-winning single to shortstop in the bottom of the seventh to help the Owls win game two.

After taking a 1-0 lead after the first, SCSU scored two runs in the second after a two-run single from Marden to give SCSU a 3-0 lead.

Saint Anselm (3-11) would score one run in the fourth and then tied the game at 3-3 after RBI singles from Lauren Galavotti and Julie LeClair.

In the seventh, Bucko hit a slow ground ball to shortstop to win the game, scoring Nicole Buch.

Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) got a no decision while going 5.0 innings while allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Yesenia Evaristo got the win going 2.0 innings while allowing one hit with one walk and four strikeouts.
