Owls Edged By Panthers, 1-0

The Owls fell to Adelphi in a Southwest Division game on Wednesday, 1-0.

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team fell in a tough Northeast-10 contest on Wednesday afternoon to Adelphi, 1-0.

Adelphi (9-9-1, 1-0 NE-10) broke the 0-0 tie in the bottom of the seventh inning. After a leadoff single by Kevin Hutzel, Matthew Wasserman would pinch run and advance to second on a fielder's choice. Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) would then replace Will Meade (Orange, Conn.) for the Owls and give up a bunt single and the Panthers would have first and third with one out. A ground out to second would score the run and prove to be the game winning RBI off the bat of Brandon Stahl.

Hurler Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) started the game for the Owls and went five and one third innings, allowing five hits and striking out three.

The Owls would threaten in the top of the third when Colin Dickinson (Litchfield, Conn.) was hit by a pitch with one out. Dickinson then would be sacrificed over by Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.) and advance to third on a wild pitch. However, Panthers starter Jimmy Malani would get Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) looking to end the frame.

Southern Connecticut (12-6, 1-2 NE-10) would have another chance in the fourth when Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) got to third on another Milani wild pitch. The Owls were unable to get him home, stranding there second runner of the day at third.  

The Owls were only able to collect three hits on the afternoon against a combined four pitchers for Adelphi.

The Owls fall to 1-2 in the Southwest Division and look to get back on track tomorrow when they host Post at 3:30 from the Ballpark at SCSU.
