NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team headed into Thursday's non-conference contest having split the first two games against Post earlier this season. The Owls and Eagles would end the season series with a tie, 5-5, after 11 innings at the Ballpark at SCSU.
Trailing by one in the bottom of the ninth,
Brandon Docimo (Stamford, Conn.) would lead off with a single to right field. After a successful sacrifice bunt and a ground out,
Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.) would have an opportunity to tie the game. Burns would deliver a game tying RBI single to send the game into extra innings.
In the 11
th, the owls would once again find themselves down a run. Docimo would reach on a wild pitch on a third strike and advance to second on a passed ball.
Matt Burns would again come to plate with men on first and third with one out. Burns would ground out on a fielder's choice, but drive in his second RBI of the day and the game would end in a 5-5 tie.
Four pitchers would combine for the tie for Southern Connecticut, including 5.0 innings from junior
Rocco Cundari (Norwalk, Conn.) out of the bullpen.
Burns finished the afternoon 3-for-6 with one run scored and two RBI. Docimo had a pair of hits and touched home plate three times on the day. Senior
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) tallied two RBI for the Owls in the tie.
The Owls will be back in action Tuesday as they travel across town to take on conference foe New Haven at 3:30 p.m.
