CLERMONT, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team split its two non-conference games today with a 6-1 win over Georgian Court, and then a 9-0 (6 innings) loss against Grand Valley State in Clermont, Fla.
In game one, the Owls (3-4) struck first with three runs in the bottom of the third inning that would be the difference against Georgian Court (3-9).
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) led SCSU going 2-for-4 with a double, 2 RBIs and a walk. Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.) also went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Hoffman made it 2-0 with a two-run double, and then
Nora Crann (West Orange, N.J.) made it 3-0 with an RBI ground out.
SCSU then scored three runs in the fifth when
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) made it 4-0 with an RBI single, and Crann made it 5-0 with a two-run double.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) got the win (2-1) with a complete game while going seven innings and allowing one earned run on two hits with seven strikeouts.
In game two, GVSU (9-2) jumped on the Owls early with four runs in the first three innings to make it 4-0. GVSU would then score three more in the sixth to end the game.
SCSU was able to only get one hit in the game.
Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) took the loss (1-1) for SCSU while going 4.1 innings and allowing six runs, five earned, on six hits with two strikeouts.
