Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) pitched a three-hit shutout to lead the Southern Connecticut State University softball team to a 7-0 win over Saint Rose in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division game from Cathy Haker Field in Albany, N.Y.
Cockrill went a complete game 7.0 innings while allowing no runs on three hits with only one walk and eight strikeouts.
Stacy Pouliot (Ledyard, Conn.) led SCSU going 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while four other players contributed one RBI each.
SCSU (20-14, 7-2 NE-10 SW) would also provide Cockrill with plenty of runs starting with four runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-0 lead.
The inning started when Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.) hit a RBI single to center field, scoring
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) from second base. The Owls then made it 2-0 after an RBI double from
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.), scoring Marden. With runners at the corners and one out, Pouliot then hit a two-run double, scoring Downs and
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.).
Cockrill made quick work of Saint Rose (8-19-1, 4-5 NE-10 SW) throughout the day while allowing no runner past second base and getting many 1-2-3 innings with some double plays as well.
The Owls also got one run in each of the fifth, sixth and seventh inning to take a 7-0 lead in the game.
In the fifth, Muscarella made it 5-0 with an RBI while
Sambina Farese (Watertown, Conn.) also had a pinch-hit RBI during that span in the seventh inning.
