Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) pitched a complete game to help lead the Southern Connecticut State University softball team to a 6-1 win over Pace in a Northeast-10 Southwest game from Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.
Cockrill got the win for SCSU going seven innings while allowing one earned run on four hits with two walks and five strikeouts. Chelsea Shea got the loss for Pace (11-15, 3-9 NE-10 SW) going five innings while allowing six earned runs on seven hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) led the Owls going 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI.
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) also went 1-for-2 with three RBI.
The game remained scoreless until the Owls (23-14, 10-2 NE-10 SW) were able to put up four runs off of Shea in the bottom of the third inning. After
Kristie Vitulli (Bronx, N.Y.) and
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) reached base, the Owls got two outs with runners on first and second. Following a walk from Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.), Downs hit an two-run single to center field to make it 2-0, scoring both Vitulli and Bucko. The very next at-bat, Hoffman made it 4-0 with a two-run double to left field, scoring Marden and Downs.
In the fifth inning, SCSU scored to more runs to make it 6-0 after Downs had an RBI triple and Hoffman followed that at-bat with a sacrifice fly and an RBI.
Cockrill was able to shut down Pace along with her run support with three 1-2-3 innings to help the Owls get the win.
