WEST HAVEN, Conn.- The Southern Connecticut State University softball team was able to split two games Thursday with New Haven in one Northeast-10 Southwest game and a non-conference game from UNH Softball Field in West Haven, Conn.
In game one, New Haven score the game-winning win in the bottom of the seventh inning to take the game, 1-0.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) got the loss for SCSU (24-15, 10-3 NE-10 SW) going six innings while allowing one earned run on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts. Micah Stonesifer got the win for New Haven (27-11, 9-5 NE-10 SW) going a complete game seven innings while allowing no runs on two hits with five walks and three strikeouts.
The Owls were only able to get two hits in the game in this tight pitching duel.
In the second, New Haven had the bases loaded after Meghan Chamoff was hit by a pitch with two outs, but did not score.
The Owls had their best scoring opportunity in the top of the fourth inning with runners on first and second with no outs after
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) walked.
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) then hit a fielder's choice, then
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) hit into a double play to end the threat.
In the sixth, New Haven had runners on first and second with two outs when Lucy Francisco singled. Cockrill was able to get Brooke Fisher to ground out to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Cockrill was not able to retire a batter after New Haven started the inning when Brittany Scott had a pinch-hit double to right center field. Brandy Dianno then had a bunt single, putting the runner, Chamoff, to third base. Christina Gelardi had the game-winning sac bunt and RBI, scoring Chamoff.
In game two, the Owls took a 4-1 lead and held on to get the win, 4-3.
Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) got the win for SCSU going 5.1 innings while allowing three runs, two earned, with five hits on two walks and two strikeouts. Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) got the save for SCSU going 1.2 innings while allowing no runs with one hit and one strikeout. Nicole King got the loss for New Haven going seven innings while allowing four runs, two earned, on four hits with nine walks and five strikeouts.
Hoffman led SCSU going 2-for-4 with three RBI, while
Stacy Pouliot (Ledyard, Conn.) went 1-for-4 with one RBI.
New Haven tied the game, 1-1, in the second when Francisco hit a double to right center, scoring Scott.
SCSU then scored one run in the fourth and two in the fifth inning to get a lead they would not relinquish. In the fourth, Pouliot hit a double to right center and gave SCSU a 2-1 lead, scoring Muscarella from first after a walk. The Owls scored two in the fifth after Hoffman had a two-run single with the bases loaded.
New Haven fought back to get within 4-3 with one run in the fifth and sixth inning after Jess Spivey scored on a throwing error and Sadie Redman hit a home run in the fifth.
In the seventh, the Owls had bases loaded with two outs, but did not score. In the bottom half, Van Alphen was able to end the game with a 1-2-3 inning for the save and the win for SCSU.
