NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
Stacy Pouliot (Ledyard, Conn.) ended the late drama to hit the game-winning home run in game two to help the Southern Connecticut State University softball team split with Le Moyne in two Northeast-10 Conference games from Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.
In game one, Le Moyne scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning and held on to defeat the Owls, 4-3.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) had the loss for SCSU (23-16, 11-4 NE-10 SW) going seven innings while allowing four runs on four hits with five walks and 10 strikeouts. Sarah Harrison had the win for Le Moyne (14-17, 7-9 NE-10 SW) going seven innings while allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
Five Owls had at least one hit.
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) went 1-for-2 with an RBI, while
Kristie Vitulli (Bronx, N.Y.) went 1-for-3 with an RBI. Demetra Kermidas led Le Moyne going 1-for-3 with the game-winning triple and three RBI.
The Owls took a 1-0 in the second inning when Vitulli hit a two-out RBI double to right center, scoring Pouliot from first base after a walk.
SCSU would then make it 3-0 with one run in each of the fourth and sixth innings.
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.) scored on a passed ball from third after a lead-off triple to make it 2-0. Muscarella then hit a two-out RBI single and advanced to second on throw, scoring
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) from second.
In the top of the seventh, Le Moyne took a 4-3 lead on four runs off of Cockrill. Le Moyne made it 4-1 after Cara Cawley hit an RBI single, scoring Erin Batson from third. With two outs in the inning, Stephanie Ostrander had a walk to load the bases. Kermidas then had the game-winning three-run triple to deep center field, scoring all three runners on base.
The Owls had
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) on base after a walk and two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but did not score to end the game.
In game two, Pouliot hit the two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Owls defeat Le Moyne, 6-4.
Pouliot led SCSU going 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI and one run. Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Kermidas led Le Moyne going 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBI.
Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) got the win for SCSU going one inning while allowing two runs on two hits with one walk and one strikeout. Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) got the no decision going six innings while allowing two runs on six hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts.
After Kermidas gave Le Moyne a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the second, the Owls scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Vitulli made it 1-1 with a fielder's choice, scoring Muscarella from third. With two outs, the Owls put up three more runs. Whitley singled to left field, scoring
Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) and
Kelly Mitchell (Seymour, Conn.) on errors. Marden then made it 4-1 with an RBI single to center field, scoring Whitley.
After Le Moyne scored a run in the sixth to make it 4-2, Van Alphen was later lifted for Evaristo in the seventh. Le Moyne would then score three runs capped off by a two-run home run from Kermidas to deep center field.
In the bottom of the inning, Downs had a lead-off walk and would advance to third with two outs after two ground outs. Pouliot then hit a monster home run to left, scoring Downs as the team celebrated at home plate to end the game.
