NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball team honored its seniors Sunday as the Owls were able to split with Le Moyne in two games from Pelz Field in New Haven, Conn.
The Owls honored there six seniors --
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.),
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.),
Sambina Farese (Oakville, Conn.),
Kate Hoffman (Orange, Conn.),
Stacy Pouliot (Ledyard, Conn.),
Kristin Whitley (North Andover, Mass.) prior to the start of game two.
In game one, the Owls were defeated by a late home run to lose the game, 2-1, in a conference game.
Kristie Capuano led Le Moyne going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Kirsten Trotta went 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs.
The Owls had three hits in the game. Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.) led SCSU going 1-for-3 with an RBI. Downs went 1-for-3 scoring one run.
Sarah Harrison got the win for Le Moyne (15-18, 8-9 NE-10 SW) with a complete game and going seven innings while allowing one run on three hits with two walks and five strikeouts.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) got the loss for SCSU (24-17, 11-5 NE-10 SW) going seven innings while allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts.
Le Moyne took the quick 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the third after Kristie Capuano had an RBI single to right center field with two outs, scoring Trotta from second.
The Owls tied the game 1-1 with a run in the fourth after Marden had an RBI single, scoring Downs from second after a double.
In the top of the sixth, Trotta hit the lead-off solo home run to left field, and the eventual game-winning hit, to give Le Moyne the 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
The Owls would have the tying run on in the sixth with two outs with Bucko on second, but would not be able to get a run. The Owls then went in order to end the game.
In game two, the Owls scored three runs in the sixth capped off by a two-run home run from Downs to give the Owls the win, 6-3.
Trotta led Le Moyne going 4-for-4 with 2 RBI and one run, while Cara Cawley went 3-for-4.
Bucko and Hoffman each had three hits for SCSU. Downs also went 1-for-4 with a home run, one run and 3 RBI.
Jessica Van Alphen (Hudson, N.Y.) got the win for SCSU going seven innings while allowing three runs on nine hits with two walks and 10 strikeouts. Erin Batson had the loss for Le Moyne going 5.2 innings while allowing six runs on 15 hits with two strikeouts.
In the third inning, Le Moyne took a 1-0 lead after an RBI single from Trotta to center field, scoring Allison Reynolds from second base after a wild pitch.
In the fourth, the Owls scored three runs to take the 3-1 lead. The Owls tied it at 1-1 when
Julie Muscarella (Suffield, Conn.) reached on an error after a bad throw by the catcher, scoring Hoffman from second. Bucko later gave the Owls the 2-1 lead with an RBI single and then Downs reached on an error, scoring a run.
In the fifth, Le Moyne tied the game 3-3 after Trotta hit a two-out RBI triple and then Fran Kiernan had an RBI single, scoring Trotta.
SCSU then took the lead for good with three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it 6-3. Whitley had an RBI and then Downs hit a two-run home run to left field to make it 6-3.
