Landell K's 12 In Split Against AIC

Landell struck out 12 in a 5-2 win in game one of a split against AIC.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Steve Landell (Higganum, Conn.) struck out 12 batters in six innings of work as the Southern Connecticut state University baseball team took game one of a doubleheader against AIC on Saturday afternoon, 5-2.

Landell worked out of jams in the first, second, third and sixth, but picked up his first win of the year, only allowing 2 runs on six hits.

AIC would get on the board first in the top of the second, but the Owls would answer in the bottom half of the inning. A.J. Rouleau (Westborough, Mass.) would score from third on a wild pitch and T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.) would pick up his 18 RBI of the season on a ground out that scored Brandon Docimo (Stamford, Conn.) later in inning.

In the fourth the Owls would add to their 2-1 lead when Colin Dickinson (Litchfield, Conn.) would lay down a sacrifice bunt and an error by AIC's first basemen would turn into a run, plating Docimo for the second time of the day.

The Yellow Jackets and Owls would each score a run in the fifth, this time it was T.K. Kiernan with a RBI. Kiernan would drive in
Micheal Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) who stole third after reaching second on a fielder's choice to make it 4-2 Owls.

Docimo would pick up an RBI in the eighth and the Owls would go onto win by a final score of 5-2.

Kiernan had a pair of hits on the day and a RBI giving him 20 on the season.

Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) picked up his fifth save of the year, setting down AIC in order in the ninth. 

The Owls fell in game two to AIC, 7-2, taking two of three from the Yellow Jackets over the weekend.

AIC scored two runs in the first inning off starter Ryan Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.). They added one in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead. The Owls would answer in the fifth, picking up two runs off the bat of Michael Cleary. Cleary singled home Jake DeRosa (North Haven, Conn.) and Shea cutting the Yellow Jackets lead in half.

The Yellow Jackets tacked on two more in the eighth, getting the win at the Ballpark at SCSU on Saturday afternoon, 7-2.

Derek Azzopardi tossed eight innings for AIC, only giving up three hits and two runs for the win.

The Owls are now 20-17-1 on the season and 6-11 in the Southwest Division of the Northeast-10 Conference. AIC falls to 17-19 overall and 5-11 in conference play.

Southern Connecticut will face cross town foe New Haven on Tuesday on the road at 3:30 p.m.
