WORCESTER, Mass. – A RBI single in the bottom of the 10
th inning propelled the Assumption Greyhounds over the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team on Tuesday afternoon, 5-4.
The Owls held a 4-3 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning, only to be forgotten as Assumption would score with two outs in the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
Southern Connecticut falls to 15-10-1 on the season, while Assumption improves to 8-19 on the season.
The Owls struck first in the top of the fourth on a
Joe Breen (Nashua, N.H.) RBI single to give Southern Connecticut a 1-0 lead. That lead would be erased in the bottom half of the inning when the Greyhounds scored three runs off starting pitcher
Steve Landell (Higganum, Conn.).
The Owls would score one in the fifth to cut the lead to one and would take the lead in the seventh.
With the bases loaded, senior
Michael Cleary (West Boylston, Mass.) would single through the left side to give the Owls a 4-3 lead.
Assumption would then score one in the ninth and again in the 10
th to get the win in a Northeast-10 Southwest Conference game.
T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.) went 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored to lead the Owls bats.
Southern Connecticut will be back in action in another Northeast-10 Conference game tomorrow at home against Adelphi at 3:30 p.m.
