ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team came from behind for the second day in a row, but were defeated by No. 20 nationally ranked Caldwell in eight innings, 3-2, in an elimination game in day three of the NCAA East Regional.
The game was a make-up from Saturday's rain out.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) took the loss for SCSU (32-22) going seven innings and allowed one run, no runs earned, on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. Yesenia Evaristo (Bethel, Conn.) got the no decision going one inning and allowed two runs on two hits with one strikeout.
Kourtney Wilson had the win for Caldwell (45-11) going a complete game of eight innings and allowed two runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Caldwell took the early 2-0 lead with two runs in the top of the first after a two-run home run from Alyssa Calderon.
The game was close until the sixth inning as both teams threatened to score. Caldwell had the bases loaded with one out, but Cockrill got out of the inning with a double play to shortstop.
In the bottom half of the sixth, SCSU got the first two runners on with back-to-back singles from
Brittany Bucko (Wallington, N.J.) and
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.).
Alyssa Downs (Seymour, Conn.) then put the Owls on the board, 2-1, with an RBI double to left center, scoring Bucko. Kaley Marden (Fremont, Calif.) tied the game, 2-2, with an RBI groundout to score Buch. The Owls again had runners on first and second with one out, but scored just the two runs.
In the extra innings, Caldwell took the 3-2 lead in the eighth with an RBI walk from Megan Fryday with the bases loaded and two outs, but the Owls could not get another comeback to end the game.
Downs led SCSU going 2-for-4 with an RBI in her final game as an Owl, while Marden was also 1-for-4 with an RBI.
