Baseball Splits Pair of Games

SANTALUCES, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team split its pair of contests earlier today.

The Owls defeated Dominican 15-1 before falling to Southern New Hampshire 3-2.

A.J. Turnier (Waterford, Conn.) earned the win.  The redshirt junior struck out three in six shutout innings of work.  Dominican only managed four hits against the righty.

Greg Zullo (Branford, Conn.) pitched the final three innings for the save.  The freshman gave up an unearned run and fanned two.

Many hitters had big days at the plate.

Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.) went six-for-nine, scored three runs and swiped three bases.

T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.) went a perfect six-for-six and scored five runs. The Owls' tri-captain drove in two.

Julian Sobin (Ansonia, Conn.) had four hits in nine at bats.  The Owls' first baseman touched home twice and had two runs batted in.

T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.) drove in two of his three runs with a double against Dominican.  On the day, the Owls' catcher went five-for-10.

Against Northeast-10 Conference foe Southern New Hampshire, Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) struck out eight Penmen in his first start of the season. Over six innings, the junior only allowed two hits and allowed one run.  

Tyler Albrecht (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) took the loss in relief of Egan, giving up two runs in the bottom of the eight.

The Owls rallied in the ninth, cutting the deficit to one.  Joe Breen (Nashua, N.H.), three-for eight on the day, grounded into a double play to end the game.

For the game, the visitors outhit SNHU 12-5.

SCSU (1-1-1) and the Penmen play again tomorrow.
