Box Score WEST HAVEN, Conn. - New Haven used three first innings runs to defeat the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team 4-1.
The visitors got on the board quickly off Owls' starter
Rocco Cundari (Norwalk, Conn.), scoring three runs in their first at bat. Only one of the runs was earned against the Southern Connecticut ace.
Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.) led off the home half with a double down the left field line. The redshirt-sophomore stole third with one down, but was stranded 90 feet away as
T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.) popped out and
Julian Sobin (Ansonia, Conn.) grounded out.
The Chargers loaded the bases with nobody out in the third. Cundari was able to hold UNH to only one run, using a pair of groundballs to get out of the inning.
The Owls scored their run when
Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) scored on a sacrifice fly by
T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.) in the eighth.
Derek Drag went seven shutout innings to pick up the win (2-1) for UNH. The senior allowed six hits and struck out four.
Cundari, who retired 14-straight batters at one point, suffered the loss (3-2) for the Owls. The senior allowed four runs, two of them earned, on five hits, walked three and struck out five over seven innings.
The Owls, 14-11-1, host Le Moyne tomorrow afternoon.
