Box Score WATERBURY, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team rallied for five runs in the final two innings, but saw the the game-tying run left stranded 90 feet away in an 8-7 loss to Post.
The Owls got on the board first, scoring an unearned run when
Julian Sobin (Ansonia, Conn.) doubled home
Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.) in the first.
Post answered with a run in its first at bat.
Sobin gave the visitors a 2-1 lead with a solo homer to right center in the fourth.
Southern Connecticut starter
Tyler Albrecht (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) ran into trouble in the fourth, allowing three runs on two hits, a solo home run and a two-run double with two outs. The redshirt-senior saw his outing end on a rough note, a two-run shot to right to start the fifth. The right-hander (Loss, 3-3) struck out five Eagles in his four+ innings.
Post, which scored three runs in the fifth, added another run in the seventh to take an 8-2 lead.
In the eighth,
T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.) followed a
Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) triple with a single to cut the deficit to five.
The Owls pounded out six hits in their four-run ninth.
Kyle Holland (Norwich, Conn.),
Greg Zullo (Branford, Conn.), Burns and Kiernan all had run-scoring hits during the inning, which ended with the bases loaded.
Sobin and Kiernan each had two hits and two runs batted in, while Baviello went 3-for-4.
SCSU, 15-12-1, hosts Le Moyne for a doubleheader on Monday afternoon. First pitch of game one is set for 1p.m.
