Box Score

WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Brandon Docimo (Stamford, Conn.) threw out the game-tying run at the plate as the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team defeated New Haven 1-0 in 10 innings.

Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.), who had three hits on the day, singled home the Owls' left fielder in the top of the 10th for the lone run of the Northeast-10 Conference game.

The New Haven-area rivals sent their aces to the mound on the sunny afternoon, and Rocco Cundari (Norwalk, Conn.) and Pat Simone did not disappoint.

Cundari went the first nine for the Owls. The senior scattered six hits and struck out seven to earn the win (2-1).

Simone allowed four hits and fanned seven in his eight+ innings of work.

The hurlers combined for six 1-2-3 innings, three for each starter.

Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) closed the game out for Southern Connecticut.

The Owls had a great chance in the top of the ninth. After Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.) and Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) reached to start the inning, Simone was relieved by John Melville (Loss, 0-2). T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.) attempted to sacrifice the runners over, but Burns was forced out on a bang-bang play at third. A hot shot down the right field line by Julian Sobin (Ansonia, Conn.) was knocked down by the first baseman to get the Owls' cleanup hitter at first. With runners on second and third, Joe Breen (Nashua, N.H.) was plunked in the back to load the bases. T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.) grounded out to end the threat.

Southern Connecticut made some great defensive plays in support of Cundari. Kyle Holland (Norwich, Conn.) threw a bullet to nab the Charger attempting to go two, while a six-three-two double play ended the home half of the third.

SCSU, 7-9-1, is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Saint Anselm on Saturday.
