Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Chris DeMorais went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and a run scored as New Haven spoiled Senior Day for the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team, 5-4.
The visitors got a pair of runs in the first off Owls' starter
Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.). After the first four Chargers reached base, the left-hander settled down to get out of a bases loaded, nobody out jam with minimal damage
The Owls got a run back in their first at bat when
Julian Sobin (Ansonia, Conn.) singled through the right side to score
Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) with one out.
Egan got into a mini jam in the second, with New Haven having its first two batters reach base. The junior worked out of the inning with no damage, striking out two Chargers in the process.
In the third, Zach Collett doubled over the head of Owls' centerfielder
Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.) to score DeMorais for New Haven's third run.
Southern Connecticut cut the lead to one in the third when
T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.) singled home
Joe Breen (Nashua, N.H.).
Brandon Docimo (Stamford, Conn.) was gunned down by Eddie Tammaro at the plate trying to score the tying run on the hit by the SCSU catcher.
Tammaro scored the Chargers' fourth run on a double by Tom Walraven in the fourth.
Baviello singled home Holland with one out in the fourth to cut the New Haven lead to one.
New Haven scored a run in the sixth when Tammaro scored on a DeMorais single up the middle off Owls' reliever
Mike Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.). The Chargers loaded the bases and were looking for more but Collett lined out to Burns to end the threat.
In the eighth, Yerina struck out two Chargers with the bases loaded to keep the Owls' deficit at two.
In the bottom half of the frame, Burns scored Shea, who led off with a double, on a groundout to cut the lead to one. The Owls had two on with two down for Kiernan, who flew out to right off of Frank Vilacha (Save, 1) to end the inning.
Egan (Loss, 2-3) struck out 10 Chargers over 5+ innings. The lefty gave up five runs, all of them earned, on seven hits.
Yerina allowed a lone hit in four shutout innings of work. The sophomore fanned six.
Vincent Arepa (Win, 3-0) earned the win in relief of starter Derek Drag.
Shea and Baviello led the team with three hits with Breen adding two hits.
