Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team swept its doubleheader with Saint Anselm. The Owls took game one 6-3, before rallying to take the second game 4-3 in 11 innings.
In the opener,
Kyle Holland (Norwich, Conn.) went 4-four-4 while
T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.) had three hits and scored two runs in the Owls' victory.
A.J. Turnier (Waterford, Conn.) allowed three runs on five hits to earn the win (3-0).
Mike Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) came on for the redshirt-junior in the seventh to earn his first save of the season.
The Owls scored two runs in their second at bat.
Ethan Joyce (Exeter, N.H.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Shea, who led off the frame with a double. Holland then singled home
Alex Wichmann (Granby, Conn.) for the second run of the inning.
Saint Anselm rallied for three runs in their second turn at the plate. Turnier attempted to work out of a one-out bases loaded jam but a two-run double with two down did in the righty.
Southern Connecticut tied the score in the top of the third when Shea doubled in
T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.) with two out.
The Owls' backstop came around to score when
Brandon Docimo (Stamford, Conn.) tripled to the centerfield wall. Wichmann then singled to score Docimo and give SCSU a 5-3 lead.
In the fourth, Kiernan added to the Owls lead with a single. Saint Anselm had reliever Tyler Buck come in to escape a one-out bases load jam with no further damage.
Turnier escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the fifth thanks to his battery mate. With runners on second and third, Shea caught the Hawks' runner straying a bit too far from his base, invoking a rundown for the third out.
In the second game, Owls' starter
Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) had a rough beginning innings before settling down. Saint Anselm scored two in the first and one in the second on four hits.
The junior did not allow a hit after the second inning until the seventh, retiring eight straight Hawks at one point. Egan, allowed three runs, all earned, on six hits and struck out 10.
The Owls got one back in the sixth when
Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) scored
Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.) on a sacrifice fly. Burns, the Southern Connecticut lead off hitter, began the frame with a single, stole second and advanced to third when the ball sailed into the outfield.
Yerina relieved Egan in a big spot in the seventh; getting out of a two-on, nobody out jam without allowing a run.
David Kent had a strong outing for Saint Anselm, pitching seven innings of six hit baseball. The right hander gave up a run, but it was unearned, and was in line for the victory.
SCSU rallied in the ninth to send the Northeast-10 Conference game to extra innings. Very similar to the preceding game, Docimo followed a Shea double with a triple, cutting the lead to a single run. Down to their final out,
Will Hindinger (Hamden, Conn.) singled up the middle on the first pitch to knot the score.
In the 11th, Docimo led off with a single before stealing second. Holland sacrificed him over to third before Joyce bunted the junior home on a delayed squeeze.
Yerina threw five innings of two-hit ball in relief to earn the win (2-1). On the afternoon the sophomore allowed three hits and struck out nine in 7 2/3 innings of work.
The Owls, 9-9-1, 4-4 Northeast-10 Conference play two against Saint Michael's tomorrow afternoon.
