NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team swept Saint Michael's in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader. The Owls, winners of five-straight, won game one 11-9 before pounding out 19 hits in a 10-5 game two victory.

The Owls struck for three runs in the first inning of the opener. The duo of T.J. Shea (Hamden, Conn.) and Brandon Docimo (Stamford, Conn.) continued to provide offense, each driving in runs with base hits during the frame.

Saint Michael's responded with three runs in its half of the inning.

Southern Connecticut added a pair of runs in the second. Ethan Joyce (Exter, N.H.) and Matt Burns (Cheshire, Conn.) led of with hits, putting runners on second and third with nobody out. Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) grounded out to score Joyce before T.K. Kiernan (Wallingford, Conn.) singled home Burns on a bunt.

After St. Michael's tied the NE-10 game with two runs in the fourth, the Owls scored two runs to take the lead back in the fifth. Kyle Holland (Norwich, Conn.), who singled home Docimo earlier in the inning, scored on a squeeze by Joyce.

In the sixth, SCSU added to its lead when Docimo singled home Julian Sobin (Ansonia, Conn.). The Owls' first baseman doubled earlier in the inning.

The Owls scored two more in the seventh. Burns hit a sacrifice fly to score Alex Wichmann (Granby, Conn.) and Kiernan singled to score Joyce two batters later.

Saint Michael's got back into the game in their half of the eighth, scoring four runs on four hits. With the visitors clinging to a two-run lead, Coach Shea brought in Rocco Cundari (Norwalk, Conn.) to try and nail down the victory. The Owls' ace allowed his inherited runner to score, but escaped further damage.

SCSU added an insurance run in the ninth when Burns had his fourth hit of the game, a double to plate Wichmann.

Starter Tyler Albrecht (Pleasant Valley, N.Y.) pitched six innings to earn his second win of the year. The Owls' co-captain allowed five runs, four of them earned, six hits and struck out four.

Cundari garnered his first save of the season, pitching the final two innings.

In the opener, the Owls were paced by Burns who went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Kiernan and Docimo each drove in two runs, while Holland led the team with three hits.

Saint Michael's quickly got on the board in the nightcap, scoring an unearned run of SCSU starter Jordan Hamler (Waterford, Conn.) in the first.

SCSU had a great opportunity to get on the board in the third, loading the bases with no outs. However, a pop out and double play kept goose egg on the scoreboard.

The Owls took the lead in the fourth, scoring two unearned runs when a Joyce grounder went through the second baseman's legs with two out.

SCSU increased its lead to 9-1, scoring seven runs in the fifth. Burns, who began the inning with his fifth hit of the afternoon, came around to score the third Southern Connecticut run when Baviello singled through the left side.

Shea had his eighth hit of the weekend, a single to score Baviello and Kiernan. Sobin touched home for the team's fourth run of the frame on a sacrifice fly by Docimo.

Holland doubled in the inning, eventually coming around to score, while Burns singled in each of his two fifth-inning plate appearances.

Southern Connecticut scored its 10th run when Docimo singled home Kiernan in the sixth.

Saint Michael's cut the Owls lead in half by scoring four runs in the home half of the seventh.

Hamler earned his second win of the season, allowing zero earned runs and five hits in six innings of work.

Burns and Shea, who drove in two and scored two runs, had three hits each in the second game.
