Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State University football team dropped a 31-10 decision to American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference contest at Jess Dow Field today.
The Owls are now 1-3, 1-2 in Northeast-10 Conference play, while AIC is 3-1, 3-0 in league action.
After not recording a blocked punt in five years, the Owls collected their second in as many weeks today.
Dion O'Joe (Waterbury, Conn.) broke through and blocked an AIC punt in the fourth quarter and returned it 21 yards for a touchdown.
It was a defensive battle for the better part of the first half. The game was scoreless after the opening 15 minutes with each team recording just one first down in the first quarter.
AIC struck first with just under two minutes into the second quarter on a 10-yard touchdown run from Maurice Easterling. The PAT made it 7-0. Jared Hulsey then added a 34-yard field goal with just 25 seconds left in the half to build the lead to 10-0 at the break.
The Owls got on the scoreboard midway through the third quarter.
Zachary Williams (Wolcott, Conn.) forced a fumble during a sack of AIC quarterback Kevin Arduino, which was picked up by
Jamie Holbrook (Milton, Vt.). SCSU turned it into three points when
Lyle Luth (Woodbridge, Conn.) hit a 20-yard field goal to make it 10-3.
On its next possession, AIC countered when Arduino broke free through the middle on a 58-yard touchdown run, with the subsequent PAT making it 17-3.
Arduino added a 1-yard touchdown run early in the fourth quarter before O'Joe delivered his punt block which turned into six points. Luth's PAT cut it to 24-10.
The Yellow Jackets added a score in the closing minutes to make it a 31-10 final.
The Owls are back in action next Saturday for a home game against Assumption.
