Box Score 2 LAKEWOOD, N.J. - The Southern Connecticut State University volleyball team split a pair of road matches as the Owls defeated Bloomfield College, 3-0, before falling to Georgian Court in straight sets on Saturday afternoon at the GCU Wellness Center. The Owls moved to 4-9 on the season, while Bloomfield fell to 5-7 and Georgian Court improved to 5-9.
Match 1Junior
Kelly Gunneson (Cheshire, Conn.) led the Owls' offense with a team-high 10 kills and five dig performance, while junior
Taylor Carlson (Centennial, Colo.) assisted 15 of the Owls' 35 kills. Junior libero
Morgan Carman (Mesa, Ariz.) finished the match with a team-high 12 kills, a kill and a service ace. Sophomore
Briauna Tutwiler (Maricopa, Ariz.) and freshman
Alexandra Nimz (Littleton, Colo.) assisted the Owls' defense with a team-high two blocks each.
Bloomfield tested the Owls in the first set, but Southern Connecticut finished strong with a 26-24 first set victory over the Bears. The Owls looked sharp through the final two sets cruising to a 25-18 score in the second followed by a 25-19 score in the third and final set.
Match 2Freshman
Alexandria Jurgens (Cornwall, N.Y.) tallied a team-high eight kills to go along with her three digs and a block. Freshman
Sean Taylor (Kent, Wash.) and Nimz led the Owls' defense with a team-high two blocks each.
Southern Connecticut fought tough in the first set against the Lions, but fell short, 25-22. The Lions took the second set in convincing fashion, 25-18, to take a 2-0 lead in the match. Georgian Court took the final frame, 25-14, and the match, 3-0.
The Owls return to the court on Tuesday, Sept. 30th as the team travels to Albany, N.Y. to take on Northeast-10 rival Saint Rose. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Daniel P. Nolan Gymnasium.
