Box Score 2 CLERMONT, Fla. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team dropped its first two games of the season today,first falling to Shippensburg 1-0 and later to Bloomsburg, 10-2.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) had a strong outing in the first game, giving up one run on three hits and one walk in six innings, but the Owls couldn't muster enough offense against Liz Parkins, who surrendered two hits and struck out nine.
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.) and
Jaime Conklin (Falls Village, Conn.) had the only two hits for Southern Connecticut.
Shippensburg manufactured its only run of the game after a leadoff walk to Jenny Peel in the third inning. Taylor Dorman pinch-ran for Peel and stole second, then advanced to third on a fielder's choice. She scored when Chloe Collins doubled down the left field line on a 3-2 count.
In the second game, Buch went 4-for-4 with two RBI, but the Owls left seven on base and committed three errors, leading to an eight-run loss at the hands of the Huskies.
Bloomsburg had a 7-0 lead before Southern scored its first run. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth, Buch singled to left field, scoring
Kelly Mitchell (Seymour, Conn.) and
Lauren Yaffa (Manchester, Conn.). That was the closest the Owls got, as the Huskies added three more runs in the top of the seventh.
On Tuesday, the Owls will play an early doubleheader against Wilmington. The games are scheduled to start at 9 and 11 a.m.
