Box Score WEST HAVEN, Conn. - Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) went 4 for 5 at the plate Tuesday with an RBI and three runs scored as the Southern Connecticut State University softball team beat down the AIC Yellow Jackets, 11-2. The game was originally scheduled to be played at AIC, but the weather forced the game to be moved to the University of New Haven.
With the win, the Owls improve to 5-8 on the year and 1-1 in the NE-10, while AIC falls to 1-11 and 0-2 in the conference.
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.) earned her fourth win of the season. She went seven strong innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits, five walks, and six strikeouts.
Leanna Feerick (Maybrook, N.Y.) also had a good outing. She went 4 for 5 with three RBI.
Southern Connecticut opened up the scoring in the first inning. Feerick singled home Koerner after the latter singled and stole second to lead off the game. After a walk by
Kelly Mitchell (Seymour, Conn.),
Kristie Vitulli (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a ground ball to Jorrdin Miller, AIC's third baseman. Miller overthrew first base which allowed Feerick and Mitchell to score. The throw home also got away, and Vitulli made it all the way around the bases to give Southern Connecticut a 4-0 lead in the first.
Sarah Coleman (Meridan, Conn.) got her first hit and RBI of the year in the fifth inning. She singled across Mitchell to make it 6-0 Owls.
After AIC managed two runs off a double and a fielder's choice, the Owls padded their lead with five more runs in the top of the seventh inning, including the first RBI of the year from
Holly Noe (Groton, Conn.). She singled to third, scoring Feerick for the eleventh and final run of the game.
Southern Connecticut returns to UNH on Wednesday when it takes on the University of New Haven Chargers in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
