Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A late inning comeback bid by the Southern Connecticut State baseball team came up short on Tuesday afternoon as the Owls fell to Adelphi 5-4 in 10 innings in a Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division showdown. Junior Nilson Ibert (Bronx, N.Y.) delivered a pinch hit RBI double to tie the game as part of a four-run eighth inning. Joe Breen (Nashua, N.H.) had two hits, including a RBI knock in the eighth and senior Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) also added three hits and a run scored. Junior Jordan Picini (Attleboro, Mass.) allowed just one earned run on four hits in four innings of relief. With their third victory over SCSU this season, Adelphi improves to 11-13 (8-6 NE-10), while the Owls fall to 13-15 (5-7 NE-10).
Adelphi batted around and scored four times off Owls' starter
Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.) in the third inning. The frame featured four hits and one throwing error, with all four runs being earned.
Still trailing by four entering the last of the eighth, Southern sent 10 batters to the plate, scoring four runs before an out was recorded. Southern Connecticut tallied five straight hits to start the inning, beginning with back-to-back singles by
Ethan Joyce (Exeter, N.H.) and Baviello. Following a pitching change, Breen then stepped up and drove a single to right field, scoring Baviello from second to get the Owls on the board.
After moving to third on a single by
Julian Sobin (Ansonia, Conn.), Breen crossed the plate on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 4-2. Ibert then stepped up the plate as a pinch hitter and drove a shot deep to the right center field wall, scoring Breen and Sobin to tie the game at four.
After getting runners to second and third with nobody out, Panthers' closer Mike Cranston slammed the door on the team's rally, using a fly ball, strikeout, intentional walk and groundout to escape further damage.
In the top of the 10th, Adelphi put two on with a pair of singles, before Alex Zycoff drove in what proved to be the winning run with a two out infield single.
Southern will travel to Syracuse, N.Y. for a three game series this weekend at Le Moyne. A single game on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
