Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team split a doubleheader Thursday afternoon at American International, losing the first game 4-3 and winning the second 6-2. The Owls are now 7-10 overall and 3-3 in the NE-10.
In the second game, the Owls were down 2-1 in the top of the sixth and scored five runs to come away with the win.
Jodi DiSanto (Bristol, Conn.) doubled home
Audrey Dolloff (Raynham, Mass.) and
Heather Jackson (Saunderstown, R.I.), giving Southern Connecticut a 3-2 lead. After a double by
Sarah Koerner (Coventry, R.I.) that moved DiSanto to third, they both advanced a base after a wild pitch.
Giuliana D'Arcangelo (Brookfield, Conn.) walked and eventually scored with Koerner after a fielding error by AIC centerfielder Kristen Steele.
Jessica Van Alphen (Husdon, N.Y.) picked up her second straight win in game two. She gave up two earned runs on five hits, three walks, and six strikeouts. D'Arcangelo also had a solid game two. She went two for three with a walk a scored two runs.
In game one, Southern Connecticut got out to a 3-0 lead after four and a half innings. In the second, Jackson singled to left field and Dolloff scored the first run of the game on an error by AIC leftfielder Jenna Costa. The Owls added two more in the fifth off a
Leanna Feerick (Maybrook, N.Y.) double that scored Koerner and
Nicole Buch (Darien, Conn.). AIC answered back with four runs in the bottom half of the fifth to take the lead off three singles, a triple, and a hit-by-pitch. It was
Kelsey Cockrill's (Haymarket, Va.) only bad inning, and the Owls only managed one hit in the final two innings. Cockrill finished the game giving up four earned runs on seven hits, no walks, and six strikeouts.
The Owls return to action Saturday for their home opening doubleheader against Queens. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
