Box Score 2 NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Redshirt senior A.J. Turnier (Waterford, Conn.) hurled a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts in game two of Friday's doubleheader, leading the Owls to a 1-0 victory over American International. Earlier in the day, the Yellow Jackets took game one by a score of 4-1. Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) had two hits in game one and Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) had a pair of hits in the second game. After taking two out of three in this week's series, the Owls now sit at 11-12 (3-4 NE-10), while AIC drops to 4-11 (1-4 NE-10).
Game 1Eddie Ritch drove in Chris Starcun with sacrifice flies in both the second and fourth innings to put AIC on top 2-0 in the opening game. In the seventh inning, Lucas Vallas clubbed his team-leading third homer of the year to left field; a two-run shot gave AIC a 4-0 cushion.
Brandon Docimo (Stamford, Conn.) led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a single through the left side. He moved to third base on a single by Baviello and scored two batters later on a sac fly by
Julian Sobin (Ansonia, Conn.) for SCSU's lone run.
Mike Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) started on the mound for Southern, striking out five over eight innings of work.
Game 2Turnier picked up his team-leading fifth victory of the year on the mound in the nightcap, striking out seven and allowing just three hits in the complete game effort.
The Owls' offense finally broke through and scored the game's only run in the sixth inning. After two quick outs to start the frame, Sobin drew a walk and then stole second.
Joe Breen (Nashua, N.H.) then smashed a hard shot off the third baseman, scoring Sobin from second with what proved to be the winning run.
Lieberman threw out the potential tying run at second base on a steal attempt in the top of the eighth inning, and the Owls had a runner of their own thrown out at the plate on a single in the bottom of the inning, but Turnier closed the door in the ninth, getting two fly balls and a groundout to finish the game.
Southern will return to action on Wednesday afternoon at home against the University of New Haven. First pitch is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
