Box Score NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Southern Connecticut State baseball team wrapped up the 2015 regular season with a 10-1 rout of Post in a non-conference matchup on Thursday afternoon. Senior
Julian Sobin (Ansonia, Conn.) was 3-for-3 on the day with a walk, three RBI and two runs scored.
Joe Uccello (Glastonbury, Conn.) had a pair of hits with two runs and one RBI, and
Jake DeRosa (North Haven, Conn.) added a two-run double in the win. Seven different SCSU pitchers combined on a five-hitter, with
Austin Brochu (Winsted, Conn.) picking up his first win of the season, tossing two hitless innings with three strikeouts. SCSU finishes the regular season with an 18-19 overall record, while Post now sits at 20-16.
Nick Baviello (Orange, Conn.) got the Owls going with two down in the first inning, reaching on an infield single and advancing on an error. Two batters later, Sobin knocked him in with a RBI single to centerfield. In the second inning,
Brandon Docimo (Stamford, Conn.) picked up a RBI on a fielder's choice, scoring Uccello to give the Owls a 2-0 lead.
The team upped the lead to 3-0 in the third. With men at the corners and one out, Sobin stole second and Baviello raced home from third on the throw through. Up next, Uccello doubled to left field to score Sobin with SCSU's fourth run of the game.
After surrendering a run in the seventh, the Owls answered with six runs, all coming after two outs. Sobin drove a two-run single back up the middle, and then scored two batters later on a fielding error. DeRosa then came through by lining a two-run double into the left-center field gap to score Uccello and
Pat Egan (Aberdeen, N.J.).
Zach Merkle (Coplay, Pa.) then stepped up and delivered a pinch hit double to right center field, scoring DeRosa with the Owls' 10th and final run.
On the mound,
Griffin Bremer (Higganum, Conn.),
Gary Flowers (East Haven, Conn.), Brochu,
Jordan Picini (Attleboro, Mass.),
Nick Moreira (Bridgeport, Conn.),
Jake Santamaria (Oceanside, N.Y.) and
Mike Yerina (Trumbull, Conn.) all combined to strikeout 13 Eagles' hitters.
The Owls will now have to wait until this weekend to learn their fate for the upcoming Northeast-10 Baseball Championship tournament. The Owls are currently in sixth place in the Southwest Division and can climb to as high as the fourth and final playoff spot if both of the following scenarios are met:
- Le Moyne loses a minimum of two of its three games at Pace this weekend
- American Int'l loses all three of its games this weekend vs. New Haven
The First Round is scheduled to take place on Tuesday, May 5.
