NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Southern Connecticut State University football team concluded the 2016 season with a 26-24 loss at the University of New Haven on Saturday.
TEAM RECORDS: SCSU 6-5 | New Haven 7-4
KEY PERFORMERS: Vochan Fowler (Bridgeport, Conn.) rushed for a game-high 93 yards on 17 carries along with a touchdown.
Eli Parks (Bristol, Conn.) and
Raymond Catapano (Franklin Square, N.Y.) also posted rushing touchdowns in the game. Catapano completed 9-of-17 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown.
Devante Jenkins (Carson, Calif.) had three catches for 59 yards, while
Mark Anthony Thomas (Bridgeport, Conn.) also had three catches.
Michael Cerisano (Newburgh, N.Y.) recorded 10 tackles to lead the defense.
UNH STRIKES EARLY: The Chargers scpred the first 13 points of the game to build a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter. The Owls answered with an eight-play, 84-yard drive in the closing minutes of the half that was capped by a one-yard run from Parks.
Joe Rice (Union Beach, N.J.) added the PAT to make it 13-7 at the half.
DEFENSE SPARKS THE OFFENSE: Southern's defense came up with a key turnover on downs early in the second half to take over at the Chargers 34. Six plays later, Fowler scored from nine yards out, and Rice's PAT made it 14-13 Owls.
BACK AND FORTH LATE: The Chargers went back ahead on the ensuing drive for a 19-14 lead and didn't trail again. Rice hit a 25-yard field goal just 10 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 19-17. However, UNH countered with another touchdown drive to pad its cushion to 26-17. Catapano scored from a yard out in the closing minutes, but UNH recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock for the win.
