Box Score GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team came up short, 6-4, on Sunday afternoon against Adelphi University in a non-conference showdown at Bonomo Field. The Owls managed to tie the Panthers in the top of the seventh, 4-4, but was unable to stop the hosts from scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the win. Following today's loss, the Owls fall to 3-2 on the season while the Panthers improve to 5-3.
Senior
Jason Harper (Saugus, Mass.) started on the mound for the Owls and pitched a total of 5.2 innings. During those innings, he allowed four runs, all earned, on eight hits while striking out two and walking one. Sophomore
Griffin Bremer (Higganum, Conn.) relieved Harper in the bottom of the sixth as well as picked up the loss for Southern Connecticut after allowing two runs, all earned, on one hit. He also walked three and struck out two Adelphi batters. Freshman
Quantique White (New London, Conn.) and senior
Austin Brochu (Winsted, Conn.) also saw time on the mound for the Owls in the bottom of the eighth. White allowed two hits while facing three batters.
Freshman
Tyler Criscuolo (Barnford, Conn.) led the Owls at the plate as he went 2-for-4 and recorded one of the Owls' four runs. Senior
Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) collected a team-high two runs as he went 1-for-3 at the plate and recorded an RBI and a walk.
Southern Connecticut broke the silence in the top of the third as Lieberman scored to give the Owls the early 1-0 lead. Lieberman started the inning for the visitors with a walk before crossing home off an error by the pitcher following a bunt from
Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.).
In the fourth inning, Southern Connecticut's offense tacked on two more runs to take a 3-0 lead over the hosts after back-to-back RBI from Lieberman and
Ethan Joyce (Exeter, N.H.). Lieberman collected the Owls' first RBI of the game as he drove in Criscuolo off a triple to center field before Joyce recorded a sacrifice bunt to send Lieberman home.
However, Adelphi rallied back in the bottom of the fourth as the Panthers registered four runs off three hits to take a 4-3 lead over the visitors.
Down by one, Southern Connecticut came back with a solo run in the seventh to tie the hosts at 4-4. With two outs and runners on first and second, a single from
Mike DeMartino (New Haven, Conn.) to right field scored
Ryan Kaplan (Fishkill, N.Y.) and moved runners to first and third. Adelphi managed to end the Owls' threat as
Alex Wichmann (Granby, Conn.) flied out to center field.
Southern Connecticut held the Panthers in the seventh, but were unable to score a run in the eighth to take late the lead. In the bottom of the eighth, Adelphi managed to capitalize on offense and tack on two more runs to take a 6-4 lead before shutting down the Owls in the ninth to secure the win.
For Adelphi, Matthew O'Connor picked up the win as he pitched 1.1 innings and allowed one hit and two strike outs. Michael Tarpey picked up the save as he came in the top eighth and recorded no hits and struck out two batters.
The Owls are back in action on Tuesday for their home opener against the University of Bridgeport.
