Box Score 2 WORCESTER, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team dropped a pair of games to Northeast Division foe Assumption College on Sunday afternoon, 15-8 in game one and 8-7 in game two. Following today's losses, the Owls fall to 8-17-1 and 1-4 while the Greyhounds improve to 13-14 and 4-1 on the season.
GAME 1: Assumption 15 | So. Conn. St. 8 Redshirt junior
Cole Bryant (Newington, Conn.) earned the tough loss for the Owls and falls to 0-2 on the season as the righty allowed seven runs off seven hits as well as walked a batter over 1.0 innings on the mound. Senior
Jordan Picini (Attleboro, Mass.) picked 2.1 innings for the Owls and collected three strikeouts and two walks while recording five hits and three runs. Sophomore
Christopher Ramos (Shelton, Conn.) and senior
Austin Brochu (Winsted, Conn.) also made an appearance on the mound for Southern Connecticut and together registered seven hits, five runs, four walks and three strikeouts.
Senior
Jake Paul (Kingston, N.Y.) had another impressive day at the plate as he went 3-for-4 and collected a run and a RBI. Juniors
Greg Zullo (Branford, Conn.) and
Kyle Hart (North Branford, Conn.) each tallied two hits and a run apiece.
Assumption jumped on top early with a 7-0 lead entering the top of the fourth before Southern Connecticut cut the Greyhounds' lead to four, 7-3, after scoring three runs off four hits and an error by the hosts. Paul recorded the Owls first RBI of the game as he singled to the right side, allowing a runner to score, before
Alex Wichmann (Granby, Conn.) doubled to left center, letting two runners cross home.
In the following half inning, Assumption managed to score another three runs to extend its lead to seven, 10-3. After a scoreless fifth inning, senior
Jake DeRosa (North Haven, Conn.) managed to reach first on a fielder choice, advancing runners, and allowed freshman
Tyler Criscuolo (Branford, Conn.) to score, cutting the lead to six, 10-4.
Assumption had another impressive inning as the Greyhounds scored another three runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a commanding 15-4 lead. However, Southern Connecticut rallied back to within six, 15-8, after the visitors collected four runs off four hits and an error, but the Owls' rally wasn't enough as Assumption took game one.
GAME 2: Assumption 8 | So. Conn. St. 7 Sophomore
Jake Santamaria (Oceanside, N.Y.) picked up the loss for game two as the lefty allowed three hits and two runs while striking out three and walking a batter over 3.1 innings. Freshman
Quantique White (New London, Conn.) started on the mound for the visitors and posted a stat line of 10 hits, six runs and two strikeouts over 4.2 innings.
Redshirt sophomores
Ryan Kaplan (Fishkill, N.Y.) and
Mike Giordano (Norwalk, Conn.) led the Owls with two hits apiece while Kaplan and senior
Jake Lieberman (Commack, N.Y.) posted a team-high two RBI.
Similar to game one, Assumption jumped out early with a 2-0 lead after collecting two runs off three hits at the end of the first. Southern Connecticut had the opportunity to tie the game in the top of the second as runners were in scoring position, but the Owls recorded the final two outs to end the inning and threat.
Over the next four innings, Assumption tacked on a run in the bottom of the third and three runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend its lead to 6-0. However, in the top of the seventh, all bats were firing on all cylinders as the Owls tallied seven runs off four hits and two Greyhound errors to give the visitors their first lead of the day, 7-6.
Assumption fought back on offense, scoring a run in both the bottom of the seventh and eighth to take a one-run lead, 8-7. In the top of the ninth, Southern Connecticut threatened the Greyhounds with runners on second and first with one out, but the Greyhounds bullpen recorded the final strikeout of the day and ended the visitors' threat.
