ALBANY, N.Y. - The Southern Connecticut State University softball team defeated Saint Rose 6-3 on Sunday evening behind a five run third inning and a 12 strikeout performance by
Kelsey Cockrill (Haymarket, Va.). Cockrill allowed just three hits and three runs in seven innings in addition to setting a season high in strikeouts.
Samantha Groskritz (Granby, Conn.) picked up an RBI with a double to right field in the third, plating
Brooke Franco (Middletown, Conn.) and
Giuliana D'Arcangelo (Brookfield, Conn.) and giving SCSU its largest lead at five runs.
With the win, the Owls are now 9-25 overall and 2-14 in the NE-10, while the Golden Knights fall to 10-20 and 5-9.

Danielle Piazza (Hopewell Jct., N.Y.) started the third inning with a walk and
Victoria Ceballos (Bridgeport, Conn.) followed on a fielder's choice.
Arianne Tedeschi (Deer Park, N.Y.) also reached on a fielder's choice, scoring Piazza and tying the game.
Arianna Medeiros (Tewksbury, Mass.) followed with a groundout to first which scored Ceballos from third. Tedeschi then came around to score on a D'Arcangelo fielder's choice to give Southern Connecticut a 3-1 lead. Finally, Groskritz launched her second double of the year to right field scoring both D'Arcangelo and Franco and giving the Owls a 5-1 lead.
Saint Rose got to within two runs in the top of the sixth but SCSU grabbed another run in the bottom half of the inning. Groskritz led off the inning with a single to center field.
Heather Jackson (Saunderstown, R.I.) pinch ran for her and scored on a sacrifice fly by Piazza.
The Owls return to action on Saturday when they travel to Syracuse to take on Le Moyne at 12 and 2 p.m.
