GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Led by a 2-for-4 showing at the plate as well as a team-high two runs from redshirt freshman
Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.), the Southern Connecticut State University baseball team earned a 3-2 Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Division win over Adelphi University on Tuesday afternoon at William J. Bonomo Field. With the win, the Owls are now 15-23-1 and 7-14 on the year while the Panthers fall to 22-21 and 12-11.
Redshirt junior
Cole Bryant (Newington, Conn.) threw a total of 8.0 innings for the visitors as the righty allowed a run, three hits a walk and seven strikeouts. With today's win, Bryant now has a record of 2-2 on the mound. Sophomore
Jake Santamaria (Oceanside, N.Y.) earned his fourth save of the season after he recorded two hits, a runa walk and two strikeouts.
Redshirt freshman
Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) broke the silence in the top of the third as his unearned run gave the Owls the early 1-0 lead. However, in the bottom of the fourth, Adelphi battled back tying the game at 1-1 following an unearned run by Hassell.
Southern Connecticut regained the lead, 2-1, thanks to an RBI single from junior
Greg Zullo (North Branford, Conn.) to allow senior
Jake Paul (Kingston, N.Y.) to score from third.
In the top of the seventh, Southern Connecticut struck again, scoring another run to take a two-run, 3-1, lead over the Panthers. With one out and the bases loaded, Paul recorded a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed runners to advance and Lamberti to score before the final out of the inning was recorded.
Adelphi's last and final threat of the game came in the bottom of the ninth as Santamaria found himself in a jam with one out and runners on first and second. Santamaria collected the second out of the inning with a strikeout, but Adelphi managed to bring the score to within one, 3-2, after an RBI single from Murphy. But, Santamaria was able to keep the Panthers at bay and forced the final batter to fly out to first for the final out.
Along with Lamberti's two hits, junior
Ethan Joyce (Exeter, N.H.) recorded a team-high two hits as well. Paul and Zullo finished the afternoon with an RBI each for the Owls.
Southern Connecticut returns to action on Friday afternoon with game one of a three-game series against Le Moyne. Game time is set for 3:30 p.m. at The Ballpark at SCSU.
