Justin Potts (Meriden, Conn.) followed with his third interception of the game to seal a 21-20 victory for the Southern Connecticut State University football team over AIC tonight.
TEAM RECORDS: SCSU 2-2 (2-1 Northeast-10) | AIC 1-3 (1-2 NE-10)
Southern's defense recorded four interceptions, three by Potts and one from
Brandon Martin (Hamden, Conn.). The Owls' special teams also forced a fumble on the opening kickoff that turned into seven points.
DIGGING DOWN LATE: Trailing 20-14 late into the fourth quarter, the Owls rallied at home for the second consecutive game. Catapano entered in place of
Robert Nittolo (Hillsborough, N.J.) and engineered a 12-play, 65-yard drive that spanned 5:30. The eventual winning score came on a pass over the middle to Jenkins, who broke multiple tackles and hurdled an AIC player at the goal line for the touchdown.
IT'S BEEN A WHILE: Potts posted the first three interception game by an Owl since Kyle Sandberg accomplished the feat against West Virginia Wesleyan in the 2008 season opener.
A QUICK START: The Owls turned an AIC fumble off the opening kickoff into a quick touchdown. SCSU went 29 yards in four plays, capped by a five-yard run from
Vochan Fowler (Bridgeport, Conn.).
Mike McNally (Cromwell, Conn.) added the PAT for a 7-0 lead.
THE TIDE TURNED: AIC scored 10 straight points in the second quarter to take its first lead of the game, but the Owls answered on their final possession of the opening half. The big play on the nine-play, 68-yard drive was a 36-yard pass from Nittolo to Jenkins on a 3rd and 27. Nittolo finished the drive himself with a two-yard touchdown run for a 14-10 lead at the half after McNally's PAT.
JACKETS MAKE A RUN: AIC once again scored 10 straight points over the third and fourth quarter to take a 20-14 advantage. However, the Owls answered with the eventual game-winning drive to secure their second win of the year.
