Owls Open NE10 Baseball Championship At No. 1 Adelphi On Tuesday, May 7

By virtue of wins against American International in two of their three meetings that comprised the season series, the Owls won the tiebreaker with the Yellow Jackets for the No. 4 seed in the Southwest Division. The Owls will face SW Division top-seed Adelphi in the first round of the 2019 Northeast 10 Conference Championship baseball tournament on Tuesday, May 7 at 3 p.m. at William J. Bonomo Memorial Field in Garden City, N.Y.
 
THE SEASON SERIES AGAINST ADELPHI
  • The Owls lost all three games against Adelphi this season, including an 8-3 loss in their last trip to Garden City on Apr. 10. Southern also lost both games at The Ballpark at SCSU, falling 7-2 on Mar. 27 and 2-1 on Apr. 24.
  • The Owls have lost the last six games they have played against Adelphi – all in NE10 play – with their last win coming on Mar. 16, 2018, 10-8, in Santaluces, Fla.
  • Southern is 5-10 in 15 games played at Bonomo Field with their last win on the Panthers' home field coming on Mar. 29, 2017, 6-3.
  • In their last meeting, Cameron O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) was 3-for-4 in the game while Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) had a RBI double that scored Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.) with the Owls' only run. Palmer reached base three times, all on walks.
  • On the mound, Ronnie Rossomando (Stratford, Conn.) took the hard luck loss after a brilliant performance on the mound. Rossomando carried a no-hitter into the fifth inning before giving up a two-out single. Before walking the previous batter, Rossomando had retired 13-consecutive batters. Both runs allowed were unearned after two costly errors in the sixth inning while Rossomando scattered three hits and striking out eight batters. 
  • Jared Henry (West Stockbridge, Mass.) struck out three over 1 2/3 innings while holding Adelphi hitless and Patrick Webler (Brockline, Mass.) pitched a scoreless ninth.
 
THE OWLS ALL-TIME IN THE NE10 TOURNAMENT
  • Southern has qualified for the Northeast 10 Baseball Championship in 12 of its 19 years in the conference and own an all-time record of 9-16 in 25 games all-time.
  • The Owls and Panthers have met three times in the NE10 tournament, with Adelphi holding a 2-1 edge.
  • Adelphi won the last two meetings, 10-4 in 2014, and 6-2 in 2011, with the Owls winning 9-8 in 2010.
  • Southern has lost five straight games in the NE10 tournament, with its last win coming in 2011 with a 4-3 victory against UMass Lowell in the tournament first round.
  • The Owls have made four NE10 Championship finals (2002, 2004, 2006, 2008) finishing as the runner-up each year.

PALM READINGS
  • Jim Palmer wrapped up the regular season with a team-leading 60 hits and became the first player since Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) in 2016 to record 60 hits in a season.
  • Palmer finished the regular season with a team-best 19 multiple-hit games as well as reaching base in the final 16 games of the season, including a five-game hitting streak.
  • Palmer also finished the year with 17 stolen bases and 22 walks while also posting a .430 on-base percentage and a .423 slugging percentage.
  • In the final 27 games of the season, following the Owls trip down South, Palmer has hit a team-leading .379 (39-103) while leading the team in hits (39), slugging percentage (.456), on-base percentage (.476), walks (18) and runs scored (20) while also stealing 10 bases.
 
BIG 'BERTI
  • Nick Lamberti finished his final season with the Owls second on the roster with 57 hits while leading the team in slugging percentage (.469) and RBI (35) while also scoring 32 runs and stealing 22 bases.
  • Lamberti, who hit .326 (57-175) also worked 19 walks while striking out just 10 times in 175 at-bats and ranked among the national leaders as one of the 15th hardest players in NCAA Division II college baseball to strike out.
  • Lamberti was 19-for-22 in stolen base attempts, and broke the program's all-time record with his 77th of his career against New Haven.
  • Lamberti recorded 15 multiple-hit games and sits at 219 career hits, the fifth-most in program history.
 
THE CRISCO KID
  • While his games played don't meet the minimum requirements for his statistics to rank nationally, Tyler Criscuolo ended the year batting .370 (40-108) with 25 runs scored, 31 RBI with a .565 slugging percentage and a .469 on-base percentage in 28 games played.
  • Criscuolo also posted a 15-game hitting streak.
  • Crisuolo was also tied for Mike DeMartino for the second-most multiple RBI games with eight, while Mac Finnegan had a team-best nine multiple-RBI games.
 
BIG RED
  • Connor Redahan had a break-out season in his second year with the Owls, hitting .322 (55-171) with 20 doubles, 28 RBI and 33 runs scored while also posting a .468 slugging percentage anda .407 on-base percentage.
  • Redahan also became just the fourth player in program history to record 20 doubles in a season.
  • Redahan had a team-high 16 game hitting streak to open the season while also posting 14 multiple-hit games. He also reached base safely in the final eight games of the regular season.
 
CAN'T DRIVE 55
  • For the year, Palmer (60), Lamberti (57) and Redahan (55) gave the Owls three players with 55-or-more hits in a season for the first time since 2011.
 
EVERYBODY SCORES!
  • Palmer, Redahan and Cloutier tied for the team lead with 33 runs scored. Lamberti (32), Cameron O'Toole (28), Anthony Zambito (28), Mac Finnegan (26) and Criscuolo (25) gave the Owls eight players with 25-or-more runs scored in a season since 2011.
 
BATMEN
  • The Owls line-up also featured six players with 25-for-more RBI for the year since 2011, led by Lamberti (35), followed by Finnegan (34), Criscuolo (31), Palmer (28), Redahan (28) and Mike DeMartino (27).
 
O'TOOLE RULES
  • Cameron O'Toole finished the regular season batting .309 (42-171) with 18 RBI and 28 runs scored.
 
COLD WEATHER OWLS
  • In the Owls 27 games since returning from trips to South Carolina and Florida, Tyler Criscuolo, Connor Redahan and Nick Lamberti have averaged a hit per game, while scoring 15-or-more runs and driving in 15-or-more in that span.
  • Southern boasts six players that average a hit per game (Palmer, Criscuolo, Redahan, DeMartino, O'Toole, Lamberti).
  • Four players have scored 15 or more runs (Palmer, Criscuolo, Redahan, Lamberti).
  • Five players have driven in 15 or more runs (Criscuolo, Redahan, DeMartino, Lamberti and Mac Finnegan).

  • Almost a 1/3 (30.1%) of the Owls total hits (444) have gone for extra bases (111 doubles, 13 triples, 13 home runs).

  • The Owls 111 doubles are the most in a single season since the 2009 team accumulated 129.

  • Ronnie Rossomando has dominated NE10 Southwest Division opponents over the last two weeks of the season, posting a 1-1 record in three starts while allowing one earned run on 11 hits over 21 1/3 innings pitched for a 0.42 ERA with 25 strikeouts.
  • Rossomando struckout 10 in seven innings while giving up one hit against AIC on Apr. 19.
  • Against Adelphi, he took the hard luck loss after a pair of errors plated two unearned runs in a 2-1 loss. Rossomando had struckout eight while giving up three hits over 6 1/3.
 
THE UNDEFEATED
  • In six starts against the Northeast 10 Conference, freshman Brandon White was 5-0, with five straight wins, with nine earned runs allowed in 36 1/3 innings for a 2.23 ERA.
  • White scattered 29 hits in that span while striking out 26 and allowing just four extra-base hits.
 
NOT AN AVERAGE JOE
  • UConn Avery Point transfer Joe Nemchek has emerged as the Owls No. 3 starter with a 2-2 record in five starts against NE10 competition with a 4.81 ERA. Nemcheck allowed 13 earned runs in 24 1/3 innings in conference play while striking out 21.
 
THE BULLPEN
  • Freshman Jared Henry has allowed 1 earned run in his last 10 innings of work across five appearances since Apr. 11 and is 1-0 with a save with a 0.90 ERA after allowing three hits and striking out 14 strikeouts with six walks.
  • For the year, Henry is 2-0 with a 4.07 ERA out of the bullpen with 28 strikeouts in 24 1/3 innings pitched while teams have hit just .186 against him.
  • Freshman Mike Ferrett has made a team-high 14 appearances and boasts a team-best 3.18 ERA with three saves. Ferrett has allowed eight earned runs in 22 2/3 innings pitched with 12 strikeouts. He hasn't allowed a run in his last 5 1/3 innings of work in his last four appearances, and has allowed a hit in his last three appearances.
  • In 11 relief appearances, freshman Tommy Hughes is 2-2 with a 3.80 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 21 1/3 innings pitched.
  • Hughes has allowed three earned runs in his 13 1/3 innings pitched in his last seven appearances while striking out 12.
  • Quantique White led the team with four saves through the regular season. He has struck out 14 over 19 1/3 innings out of the bullpen. In a spot start against New Haven, White hurled a complete-game, two-hit shutout. White was masterful as he struck out six batters, while walking one and allowing just four baserunners for the afternoon, none of which reached second base.
  • The Owls' closer, White has saved 15 games in his four-year career including four this season, before getting the spot-start against the Chargers. It was White's first win as a starter of his career and his first win since Mar. 13, 2017.
