SCSU Football Places Six On NE10 All-Conference Teams

MANSFIELD, Mass. – Southern Connecticut football placed six student-athletes on the 2022 Northeast 10 All-Conference teams, as announced by the NE10 on Wednesday, Nov. 16. Tylon Papallo led the list of honorees with a selection to the NE10 First Team, while Hasan Dominick and Joe DiGello were named to the Second Team.Andreas Picarelli, Dan Schwartz and Josh Nieves were  named to the All-Rookie Team.

Papallo received his second all-conference nod in as many seasons after he was named to the Second Team in 2021. He is also the 38th player in program history to be named to the NE10 First Team. He also finds himself in elite company as the sixth wide receiver in SCSU history to be named to the NE10 First Team, joining Devante Jenkins (2015), Willie Epps (2010), Jim Lukowiak (2005), Jeff Cupe (2002) and Louis Datil (2001).

This season, Papallo continued the conversation as one of the top wide receivers in the conference after totaling 694 yards (3rd, NE10) on 46 catches (4th) for an average of 15.1 yards per catch (3rd) that equated to a 63.1 yard per game (3rd) average. Papallo was also fourth in receiving touchdowns with five. Papallo also led the conference in punt return yards with 194 and ranked fourth in the conference with 878 all-purpose yards. The highlight of the season was Papallo's 82-yard punt return touchdown against Franklin Pierce.

Dominick and DiGello earned their first NE10 honor. Dominick capped his stand-out year in the season finale with a season-high 13 tackles against New Haven. Dominick finished the year with a team-leading 86 tackles, with 43 solo and 43 assists, including nine tackles for a loss. Dominick completed his senior year with 187 career tackles with six sacks. His 86 tackles this season were the most at Southern since Michael Cerisano had 88 in 2016, and he's the first Owls' player to lead the team in tackles in consecutive seasons since Cerisano did it 2016 and 2017.

DiGello finished the season ranked 10th in the NE10 with 63 tackles while his 40 solo tackles ranked fifth behind Dominick's 43 in the conference. DiGello tallied a team-best four sacks (11th) as well as 12.5 tackles for loss (3rd). He also forced a team-leading two fumbles and also intercepted two passes, one of which he returned for a 50-yard touchdown at New Haven early in the season. He was named the NE10 Defensive Player of the Week for his game against the Chargers.

Picarelli earned All-Rookie recognition after he led the NE10 with 2,341 punting yards, while his 36 yards-per-punt ranked fifth in the conference. Picarelli also led the NE10 with 18 fair catches and was third with 14 punts inside the 20. Of note, he recorded the longest punt in program history with an 84-yarder against Post, which also stands as one of the longest in NCAA history.

Schwartz had a standout season on the offensive line for the Owls, appearing in all 11 games for the Owls with six games on the offensive line in his first season with the Owls. In that span, the Owls ran for 683 yards and produced 12 touchdowns, including a 300+ yard day with three touchdowns against Post while also passing for over 1,000 yards and eight touchdowns.
