Southern Connecticut baseball will wrap-up the regular season with a four-game series at Adelphi on May 5-6 in Garden City, N.Y. The Owls head into the final weekend of the 2023 season with a record of 29-11 overall and 12-4 in the Northeast 10 and sit in first place in the NE10 Southwest Division while also receiving votes in the latest NCBWA Division II National Poll. The Owls currently rank 2nd in the NCBWA East Region Poll. Adelphi is 18-24 overall and 5-11 in conference play.
 
The Playoff Picture
Southern currently sits in first place in the NE10 Southwest Division at 12-4, leading Le Moyne (11-5) and New Haven (9-6). The Owls and Dolphins have four games remaining, while New Haven has five. Southern owns the tiebreaker against both teams after taking four-of-four against Le Moyne and 3-of-4 against New Haven. Le Moyne and New Haven will play four games against each other this weekend, while New Haven will face Saint Rose on Sunday, May 7.
 
Owls Notes
  • Billy Sullivan leads the Owls with a .374 average (61-163) while also leading Southern in runs (49), hits (61) and stolen bases (16). Sullivan has also totaled 10 doubles, two home runs and 31 RBI as well as 18 walks for a .441 on-base percentage.
  • Sullivan has multiple hits in 22 of his 39 games played and has the Owls' longest on-base streak of the season with 23 games.
  • Connor Goggin is hitting .353 (49-139) with 11 doubles, nine home runs, 37 RBI and 42 runs scored. Goggin also has 25 walks and has been hit by a pitch a team-high 10 times for a .480 on-base percentage.
  • Goggin also has 12 stolen bases and leads the team with a 1.135 OPS and .655 slugging percentage.
  • Mike Ferrett is hitting .350 (50-143) and is second to Sullivan in hits while leading Southern with 12 doubles. Ferrett has also accumulated three home runs, 38 RBI and 34 runs scored.
  • Andrew Eng leads the Owls with 11 home runs, 45 RBI and 45 walks, which is a new program record. Eng also has 45 runs scored and a team-high .487 on-base percentage to go along with a .615 slugging percentage and a 1.102 OPS.
  • Eng has driven in multiple runs in 13 games this season and is currently riding a 17-game on-base streak.
  • On the mound, Nick Guarino is 9-1 with a 3.73 ERA with team-highs in strikeouts (49) and innins pitched (70).
  • Guarino is 5-0 in six NE10 starts with a 2.65 ERA with 22 K's in 37 1/3 innings pitched. Guarino has given up just six extra-base hits in NE10 play this season. He enters the game with wins in each of his last three starts and a 1.89 ERA.
  • Tommy Benincaso is 6-0 on the year with a 4.56 ERA with 47 K's in 53 1/3 innings pitched. Against the NE10, he is 3-0 in five starts with a 3.41 ERA with 23 K's in 29 innings pitched.
  • He's won three of his last four starts and owns a 2.35 ERA in that stretch.
  • Mike Szturma is 2-2 in nine starts with a 4.00 ERA. Szturma has 45 strikeouts in 45 innings pitched. In four NE10 starts, Szturma is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA and 23 K's in 23 1/3 innings pitched. The Owls junior is coming off a 12-strikeout performance in his last start.
  • Steve Phillips carries a 4-4 record in 10 starts this season and is 3-2 in six NE10 starts.
  • Tommy Hughes has yet to give up an earned run in 7 2/3 innings in seven appearances in NE10 play as the Owls closer and is 7-for-7 in save appearances.
  • For the year, Huges is 1-0 in a team-leading 14 appearances with a 2.00 ERA and 10 saves, as well as 22 K's in 18 innings pitched.
  • Peter Phillips brings a 4-0 record and a 3.13 ERA to the series. Out of the bullpen in 12 appearances, Phillips has 16 K's in 23 innings pitched against just three walks. In NE10 play, he has one earned run allowed in 11 2/3 innings in five conference games with a 3-0 record an 0.77 ERA.
