NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Southern Connecticut field hockey saw a back-and-forth battle against Saint Michael's college end in a 3-2 win in a Northeast 10 conference matchup at Saint Michaels. With the win, the Owls moved to 4-5 overall and 3-2 in NE10 play while Saint Michaels went to 2-7 overall and 2-3 in the NE10.
Tori Geaglone, Natalia Fiato and Bridget Andros scoredgoals for the Owls while Trinidad Rodriguez Ricchiuti and Mia Oliverio picked up assists. Southern has now won their last three matches and are now over the 500 mark in NE10 play.
After Saint Michael's jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, with goals by Allie Medeiros at the five-minute mark and Madeline Biondi just after the 12-minute mark, the Owls offense went on the response towards the end of the quarter. The Owls scoring opened with a goal by graduate student Tori Geaglone .
With 5:24 left to go in the half, the Owls found themselves with a penalty corner down 2-0. Attempting the corner for the Owls was Trinidad Rodriguez Ricchiuti. Ricchiuti passed the ball towards the top of the box, where Geaglone received the pass, shot and scored, putting the Owls on the board and bringing the score to 2-1. Geaglone's goal was her sixth on the year putting her one behind Meghan Tillona for the team lead.
Geaglone's goal would not be the last goal for the Owls, as with just over two minutes to go, the Owls tied the game at two. With the Owls now down by just one, they find themselves with another penalty corner. As Ricchiuti passes the corner in, the balls end up with Ruby Webb. After Webb's shot on goal is wide, but Natalia Fiato is there to tap in the rebound and tie the game at 2-2. Fiato's goal brings her season total to two.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Owls would pick up the game deciding goal with just under 11 and a half minutes to go. After a long clear from purple knights goes out of bounds, the Owls start to work the ball up the field. Webb passes the ball through the middle of the field to Oliverio who corrals the ball at midfield. Oliverio, dribbling through traffic tries to send a pass to the front of the goal for Tillona but the pass ends up going into the goal. Oliverio's goal was her first on the season.
Southern is back in action when it takes on cross town rival University of New Haven in a Northeast-10 Conference matchup at Jess Dow Field on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
