SCSU Baseball Opens Season With 6-4 Win Against Saint Anselm

Box Score MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.  – Southern Connecticut baseball opened the 2024 season with a 6-4 win against Saint Anselm in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Owls kick off the year at 1-0 while Saint Anselm stands at 0-1.

Jack Drewry led the Owls' offense with a 2-of-3 day with two RBI after driving in Southern's first two runs of the season. Freshman Jake Chacho, who transferred after redshirting last season at Southern New Hampshire, was 2-for-4 in his Owls' debut while Derrick Jagello also had two hits while Izaiah Walker drove in a pair of runs.

Owls standout Billy Sullivan had the Owls first hit of the year and also drove in a run. Steve Phillips opened the year with a win on the mound after allowed three runs over 5 1/3 while scattering four hits. Spencer Fox came on in relief and struckout seven batters over 3 2/3 for the save.

Southern took an early lead when Chad Fedeli walked and Billy Sullivan singled before Drewry lined a two-out single to right field to plate both runners. Phillips was cruising as he retired the first six batters of the game.

In the third, Devin Pelletier, a transfer from Division I Fairleigh Dickinson, recorded his first hit as an Owl before Drewry worked a walk. Walker's groundball to second was misplayed and then thrown away, allowing Pelletier and Drewry to score and give the Owls a 4-0 lead. In the fourth, Chacho and Jagello both singled to lead off the inning before Mike Talavera bunted both runners over. Fedeli then hit a hard hit ball to short that allowed Chacho to score and give the Owls a 5-0 lead.

Phillips meanwhile didn't give up a hit until the fourth inning and kept the Hawks off the board through five. He left the game with one out in the sixth for Fox with runners on base that ended up scoring as the Hawks trimmed Southern's lead to 5-3.

In the sixth, Chacho walked before Jagello singled to left. After Talavera was retired, Fedeli walked to load the bases to set up Sullivan with the sacrifice fly that pushed Southern's lead to 6-3. Saint Anselm managed another run but the Owls held on for the win.

Southern and Saint Anselm are back in action with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. in Myrtle Beach.
