Box Score 2 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Southern Connecticut baseball split a double header against Saint Anselm College at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. With the split, Southern Connecticut improves to 2-1 while Saint Anselm falls to 1-2.
Mike Szturma started game one for the Owls and dominated, tossing six innings allowing one run on two hits while striking out 12. Szturma's one run came on a walk with the bases loaded. Szturma gave way to Owls' starting shortstop Chad Fedeli who hurled three hitless, scoreless innings to pick up the win in relief.
Fedeli also drove in a run for the Owls in the 3rd inning when he smacked a double to right scoring Jake Gruttadauria; however, in the bottom half of the frame Szturma would find himself in a bases loaded jam, but he only allowed one runner to score on a walk which tied the game at one.
The Owls bats would go quiet for the next five innings, until the top of the ninth. With Tyshaun Diaz on first base, the big bat of Jack Drewry came up to the plate. Drewry smacked a two run home run over the right field fence scoring Diaz and expanding the Owls lead to 3-1.
Right fielder Jake Gruttadauria added insurance to the Owls lead as he grounded out scoring Iziah Walker expanding the Owls lead to 4-1. After a scoreless inning from Chad Fedeli, the Owls took the win 4-1.
In Game two, Saint Anselm defeated Southern by a score of 10-0. With the loss, the Owls dropped to 2-1 while Saint Anselm improved to 1-2. Keegan Daigle got the start and he went two and two thirds innings allowing three runs on three hits. With this being one of the first games after a full winter of workouts, the Owls bats were quiet.
Southern is back in action Sunday for another game against Saint Anselm at 3 p.m. in Myrtle Beach S.C.
