SCSU Men's Track and Field Wins Seventh Straight NE10 Indoor Title, 18th Title in Program History

BOSTON, Mass. - Southern Connecticut men's track and field won its seventh straight Northeast-10 Conference Indoor Championship, and 18th all-time at the TRACK at New Balance Center. The Owls finished the 2024 NE10 Indoor Championships with a total of 238 points, which is the most points totaled since 2020. Southern won their 12th straight indoor shot put championship, recorded six individual championships, three gold medals in three different relays, seven silver medals and six bronze medals.

In addition to the men winning their seventh straight NE10 Indoor Title in program history, the women also won their first NE10 Indoor Title since 2011 and their fourth NE10 Indoor Title title overall. This is the first time since 2011 and the fifth time in league history in the NE10 that a school has won both the men's and women's championships. Also, this is the first time in NE10 history that a school has won both the men's and women's track and field championships, and the men's and women's cross country championships in the same academic year.

Track Results
In the Mile, Jonathan Volpe finished in first place with a time of 4:15.16 as Owen Gagne came in third place with a time of 4:19.52. 

In the 800 Meters, it was an Owls' sweep as Jonathan Volpe defended his title and came in first place with a time of 1:53.30, Marquis Whyte finished in second place in a time of 1:54.49 and Jack Mulcunry finished in third place with a time of 1:54.87.

In the 4x800 Relay, the Owls' relay team of Marquis Whyte, Dylan Horkey, Owen Gagne and Jack Mulcunry finished in first place with a time of 7:54.09. 

In the 4x400 Relay, the Owls' relay team of Osaretin Osagie, Max Musial, Matt Kilmer and Hunter Dale finished with a time of 3:18.54 in first place. 

In the 3000 Meters, William Lamburn finished in second place with a time of 8:49.83 and Luca Cazzaniga came in second place in a time of 8:50.48.

In the 60 Meter Hurdles, Osaretin Osagie came in third place with a time of 8.19, which was one of the best times this year in NCAA Division II.

In the 60 Meter Dash, Nolan Freeman posted a second place finish with a time of 7.00.

In the 400 Meter Dash, Hunter Dale recorded a third place finish in a time of 48.63.

For the Heptathlon, Dylan Torok took first place with 4804 points, which is one of the most points totaled in the Heptathlon in NCAA Division II this year. Torok was also named Most Outstanding Field Athlete by the NE10.

Torok: 9.29 (fifth place) - 683 points

Pole Vault:
Torok: 4.20 meters (first place) - 673 points

1000 Meter Run
Torok: 2:59.10 (second place) - 673 points
Gaeta: 3.00.08 (third place) - 663 points

Field Results
In the Shot Put, Cameron Belton defended his title for the third straight year and broke his own NE10 record that he set in 2022, as he finished in first place with a mark of 17.80 meters. Natanael Barbosa Torres finished in second place with a mark of 15.84 meters. 

In the High Jump, both Kenny Okoye and Jason Sawicki finished in a tie for second place with a jump of 1.93 meters.

  • In the Mile, Nathanael Huebner finished in ninth place with a time of 4:29.53. 
  • In the 400 Dash, Sam Sandler finished in fourth place with a time of 48.75, Max Musial came in fifth place in a time of 49.27 and Matt Kilmer came in sixth place with a time of 49.54.
  • In the 800 Meters, Besufekad Opstrup finished in sixth place with a time of 1:56.47.
  • In the 3000 Meters, Sean Barkasy came in fourth place in a time of 8:51.34, Matt Speight came in 12th place with a time of 9:06.45 and Ryan Gagne finished in a time of 9:15.42.
  • In the 200 Meter Dash, Sam Sandler came in fourth place with a time of 22.01, Osaretin Osagie came in fifth place in a time of 22.14 and Noah Conrod finished in seventh place with a time of 22.80.
  • In the Shot Put, Leo Jolly threw for 11.40 meters. 
  • In the Triple Jump, Aaron Sandler finished in sixth place with a mark of 13.00 meters. 
  • In the Heptathlon, Anthony Gaeta finished with 3239 total points.
