SCSU Softball Defeats Shepherd, Falls To Purdue Northwest

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Southern Connecticut softball split a pair of games at The Spring Games, defeating Shepherd, 5-2, before falling to Purdue Northwest, 10-6. The Owls will travel back to New Haven with a record of 2-6.

In the first game of the day – the Owls' 5-2 win against Shepherd – Emily Lange, Rachel Miller and Katrina Roy all collected two hits and drove in a run each. On the mound, Jessica Perucki improved to 2-1 after scattering five hits over seven innings and striking out five while allowing just two unearned runs.

Southern came from behind to take the W against the Rams after Shepherd broke through with a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. In the top of the 5th, Lange got on base after being hit by a pitch, but was caught stealing for the second out of the inning. Faith Barbieri drew a walk before Karley Austin singled to center field. Miller followed with a base hit to score Barbieri before Roy reached on an error down the line that allowed Miller and Austin to score and give the Owls a 3-2 lead. Perucki then battled through an error in the bottom of the 5th and pitched through a jam to get out of the inning without giving up a run.

In the bottom of the  6th, Dominique DeLutri drew a one-out walk and stole second. After the second out of the inning, Lange drove DeLutri home with a single to center field. Lange, who advanced to second base on the throw to get DeLutri at the plate, moved to third on a ground ball by Barbieri and then scored on a wild pitch to give Southern the 5-2 lead. Perucki was untouchable the rest of the way as she retired the last seven batters she faced.

In the second game, Miller drove in two more runs for the Owls while Austin was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Lange scored twice and Nadia Cestari drove in a run with a double. It was a back-and-forth game from the start, with Purdue Northwest scoring twice in the first inning.

In the bottom of the 1st, Lange and Roy walked to lead off the inning before Austin hit a deep flyball to right that moved both runners up. Miller then rifled a ball to short that was misplayed and allowed Lange to score to cut PNU's lead to 2-1.

Southern took the lead in the bottom of the 2nd. Cestari smashed a ball to second that was caught before Lorelei Stancavage drew a walk. Gabby Festa then doubled to center to move Stancavage to third. After Lange popped up for the second out of the inning, Roy worked a walk to set up Austin for a two-run single to give Southern a 3-2 lead. Southern made it 4-2 when Miller led off the bottom of the 3rd with a single before Nicole Spinelli bunted pinch runner Samantha LaFemina to second and Cestari crushed a double to left center to score her and give Southern a 4-2 lead.

PNU strung together four hits to push across the tying runs in the top of the 4th. In the bottom of the inning, Lange walked before Roy was retired. Austin doubled to left center to move Lange to third before Miller hit a sacrifice fly to score Lange, but an error on the relay allowed Austin to score and give Southern a 6-4 lead. Southern's lead was short-lived as PNU scored six runs in the top of the 5th.

Southern is back in action on Sunday, Mar. 17 when it travels to Rockville Centre, N.Y. to take on Molloy in a 12 p.m. doubleheader. The Owls open up at home on Wednesday, Mar. 20 when they host Mercy for two at 2:30 p.m.
