NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated The College of Saint Rose, 14-6 in an NE10 matchup on Tuesday afternoon. The Owls improved to an overall record of 5-2 and an NE10 record of 2-1 while the Golden Knights dropped to an overall record of 1-3 and a conference record of 0-1.
Alexandra Ruel and
Kirsten McIntire recorded a team-best of four goals and four points for the Owls.
Savannah Feinberg posted three goals and three points.
Morgan Reilly,
Allie Palmer and
Anna Meserve each had a goal for Southern Connecticut State.
Hannah Holmes and
Sarah Robbins both had a team-best of two ground balls, as Robbins led the team in caused turnovers with three.
Morgan Reilly and
Sammy Sleve led the team in assists with one each.
Michela Rutigliano had a team-best of two draw controls. Goalkeeper
Caelan Connors recorded 11 saves in the win for the Owls.
In the first quarter, Saint Rose got on the board with three goals in the last couple minutes of the quarter. However,
Kirsten McIntire recorded the first goal of the game for the Owls at the 3:03 mark. In the second quarter,
Savannah Feinberg recorded the Owls' second goal quickly, unassisted. This set the scoring momentum in motion for Southern Connecticut. McIntire scored her second goal to tie the game then not even a moment later,
Alexandra Ruel scored her first goal, to give the Owls, their first lead of the game.
Ruel scored again with six minutes left on the clock.
Anna Meserve added a goal of her own before halftime, to put the Owls on top with a 6-3 lead. Southern Connecticut scored five unanswered goals in the second quarter as they headed into the break.
In the third quarter, McIntire, with an assist by
Morgan Reilly, recorded her third goal of the game. Then,
Savannah Feinberg had her second goal and the teams' eighth goal of the day. The Golden Knights scored their fourth goal of the day; however,
Alexandra Ruel and
Allie Palmer scored goals to extend Southerns' lead to six goals, heading into the final quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Saint Rose scored first but
Morgan Reilly answered back with her first goal of the day. With 10 minutes left to go,
Kirsten McIntire recorded her fourth goal of the game, with an assist from
Sammy Sleve. Ruel recorded another goal unassisted, shortly after, as that put the Owls up, 13-8. The last goal for the Owls would come from Feinberg, unassisted as it allowed Southern Connecticut to grab their fourth-straight victory.
The Owls return to action on Saturday, March 23 for Senior Day in a non-conference matchup against Saint Thomas Aquinas College at 1:00 p.m. at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Connecticut.
