NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated American International, 26-1 in an NE10 matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets dropped to an overall record of 1-10 and an NE10 record of 0-5. The Owls improved to an overall record of 10-2 and an NE10 record of 4-1. With the victory, Southern broke the program record for the largest margin of victory, with 25 goals and the previous record being 24 goals. In addition, the Owls tied for the second most goals scored in a single game in program history. 17 different players scored a goal or more in the victory over American International.
Sofia Boucher and
Rebecca Sibley led the Owls with three goals, as Boucher and
Taryn Ugrin had a team-best of five points. Five players scored two goals:
Taryn Ugrin,
Anna Meserve,
Abigail Nolan,
Macy Vail and
Anna Corcoran. Nine players scored a goal:
Madison Olmstead,
Maddox Burton,
Allie Welder,
Hannah Hathway,
Nicolette Spotlow,
Alyssa Leonardi,
Breya Montague,
Georgi Kirtley,
Bailey McDermott and
Mia Hartmann. Ugrin and
Madison Olmstead had a team-best of three assists.
Alyssa Leonardi picked up a team-best of three ground balls.
Allie Welder and
Macy Vail had a team-best of two caused turnovers.
Rebecca Sibley won a team-best of five draws. In goal,
Kiley Nolan got her first victory of the season, as she posted three saves, in three quarters, while
Caelan Connors recorded three saves in a quarter against the Yellow Jackets.
In the first quarter, the Owls started off strong with a goal, in the first minute of play, by
Abigail Nolan. From there, Southern continued to strengthen their momentum as they scored three goals in a span of two minutes, as
Taryn Ugrin,
Macy Vail and
Hannah Hathway all got on the board. Then,
Nicolette Spotlow and
Rebecca Sibley, both scored their first goals of the day. American International scored a goal; nevertheless, Sibley,
Allie Welder,
Sofia Boucher and
Abigail Nolan all scored goals before the quarter ended, to go up 10-1.
In the second quarter,
Macy Vail recorded her second goal of the game, right before
Anna Meserve got on the board.
Sofia Boucher would then go on to score back-to-back goals and after that,
Anna Corcoran scored her first goal of the game. The Owls headed into halftime, up 17-1.
In the third quarter, Southern contunued to build off of what they started in the first half as
Alyssa Leonardi scored her first goal of the game. Then,
Taryn Ugrin and
Anna Corcoran scored goals before
Georgi Kirtley scored her first career goal, to put the Owls up, 21-1.
In the fourth quarter,
Breya Montague recorded her first goal, early on. Then, Sibley, McDermott, Olmstead and
Mia Hartmann all scored goals, throughout the quarter. The Owls finished the game, with a 26-1 victory over American International.
The Owls will return to action on Saturday, April 11 at 1:00 pm in an NE10 matchup against Assumption as Southern will celebrate its seniors on Senior Day.
