SCSU Softball Sweeps Mercy, 7-1 and 6-4 (5 Inn.)

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut softball swept a non-conference doubleheader against Mercy, 7-1 and 6-4 (5 Inn.) at the Owls' home opener at Pelz Field. With the two wins, Southern improved to 4-8 overall while Mercy dropped to 2-10 on the season.

In the first game, Jessica Perucki improved to 3-2 while lowering her ERA to 0.52 after holding Mercy to a single, unearned run in a complete game three-hitter that saw the Owls' grad student strike-out seven. Perucki has been almost untouchable in 34 1/3 innings over five starts as she's allowed just two earned runs, and seven overall, with 30 strikeouts against three walks. Perucki also helped her own cause with a  two-run single in the fourth. Gabby Festa was also 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a RBI single. Emily Lange, Karley Austin and Dominique DeLutri also drove in a run in the Owls' win.

The second game of the doubleheader was called after 4 ½ innings, with Southern leading, due to rain and darkness. The Owls used a two-run fourth inning to push them to a 6-4 lead. Rachel Miller was 3-for-3 with a stolen base, while Katrina Roy stole two bases and scored a run. Lange was also 1-for-2 with two runs scored as well a two-run triple. It was Lange who scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning before Cestari scored to give the Owls a two-run lead. Ashley Lewis picked up her first win of the season to improve to 1-3 after giving up three earned runs on six hits while striking out five in five innings pitched.

Southern is back in action on Sunday, Mar. 24 when it travels to Caldwell, N.J. to take on Caldwell University in a non-conference doubleheader set for a 12 p.m. start. Southern returns home on Tuesday, Mar. 26 to host Bloomfield at 2 p.m. at Pelz Field.

SCHEDULE NOTE: Southern was previously scheduled to travel to University of Bridgeport for a non-conference doubleheader on Thursday, Mar. 21, but the twinbill was rescheduled for Thursday, Apr. 4 due to the threat of inclement weather.
