SCSU Softball Splits With Saint Rose, Perucki Hurls Shutout, Homers In Game 1 Win

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut softball split a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against College of Saint Rose with a win in the first game, 4-0, before falling to the Golden Knights, 4-1 in the second game. Southern went to 7-9 overall and opened its NE10 schedule at 1-1 while Saint Rose is 8-6 and 1-1 in conference play.

The Owls won the first game of the afternoon behind an incredible all-around performance from Jessica Perucki. Perucki improved to 5-2 on the season with a complete game, two-hitter with six strikeouts and also hit a two-run homer to help her own cause. Perucki also had a two-run single in the game.

Perucki gave up a single to the first batter of the game and then walked the third batter before retiring the next 10 batters she faced into he fourth inning. In the bottom of the third Karley Austin lined a one-out single to center field. After the next batter lined out to shortstop for the second out of the inning, Rachel Miller and Gabriella Festa both singled to load the bases. Perucki then singled home Austin and Miller to give the Owls a 2-0 lead. Miller finished the day 2-for-3 in Game 1.

In the bottom of the fifth, Festa walked to lead-off the inning before Perucki blasted her first home run of the season – a bomb to deep left field that gave the Owls a 4-0 lead. Perucki allowed just one baserunner over the final two innings for the win. The Owls Ace has now won five her last six starts and lowered her ERA to 0.37 for the year. For the year, she's allowed just two earned runs over 48 1/3 innings and hasn't given up an earned run in 23 consecutive innings.

In the second game, Dominique DeLutri was 2-for-3 with an RBI. DeLutri drove in Jordan Chamberlain with the game's first run in the fourth inning. On the mound, Ashley Lewis held the Golden Knights hitless for the first three innings before giving up a lead-off double in the fourth. She settled in to retire the next three batters in the inning. Saint Rose struck for three runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead and tacked on another run in the sixth. Madison Prior pitched two innings in relief, holding Saint Rose to a run on two hits while striking out three.

Southern is back in action on Saturday, Mar. 30 when it hosts American International for a NE10 Conference doubleheader at Pelz Field at 12 p.m.
