SCSU Softball Sweeps NE10 Doubleheader Against AIC

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Southern Connecticut softball swept a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader against American International, winning the first game, 6-1, and the second game, 10-6. With the win, the Owls improved to 9-9 overall and 3-1 in the NE10 and have now won seven of their last eight games. AIC dropped to 8-8 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Southern saw another dominating performance on the mound from Jessica Perucki, who ran her consecutive scoreless innings streak end at 28 2/3 innings. Perucki held the Yellow Jackets to one run on three hits in a complete game victory that also saw her strikeout a season-best 12 batters. Perucki also drove in two runs to help her own cause and reached base three of four times she appeared. Gabriella Festa also drove in two runs, and scored another, while Nicole Spinelli and Emily Lange also drove in runs.

For the year, Perucki is 6-2 with a NE20 leading 0.34 ERA, which also ranks second nationally. The Owls hurler also leads the NE10 in WHIP at 0.73, which ranks fourth in the country.          
      
In the second game, the Owls jumped out to a 9-0 lead through the third inning capped by Nadia Cestari's first career home run. Cestari was 2-for-3 with a solo home run in the third and two runs scored while Rachel Miller was 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Festa managed two more hits with a RBI and a run scored while Lange drove in a run and scored twice.

Ashley Lewis got the start and here three near-perfect innings. She allowed just one hit and struck-out two. Madison Prior picked up her first win as an Owl after holding the Owls' lead for two innings before Miller pitched a perfect seventh inning. Miller has been red hot at the plate for the Owls this year to the turn of a team-high .390 average while leading Southern in hits (23) and RBI (11) with five doubles and nine runs scored. Lange and Austin have both scored a team-high 11 runs while Lange has a team-leading six doubles. Festa has matched Miller's 11 RBI.

After compiling a 5-1 record on its recent homestand, the Owls will hit the road this week for doubleheaders at Bridgeport on Thursday, Apr. 4; at Assumption on Saturday, Apr. 6 and at Bentley on Sunday, Apr. 7. Southern returns home on Wednesday, Apr. 10 to host New Haven for a 2:30 p.m. doubleheader at Pelz Field.
