NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Southern Connecticut women's lacrosse defeated Post University, 18-5 in a non-conference matchup at Jess Dow Field. The Owls improved to an overall record of 7-3 while the Eagles fell to an overall record of 4-4.
Kirsten McIntire and
Anna Meserve led the team with three goals and three points, as five Owls had two goals and two points;
Savannah Feinberg,
Allie Welder,
Bailey McDermott,
Allie Palmer and
Abigail Nolan.
Alexandra Ruel added a goal and three points as
Amelia Mansfield added a goal and a point to the teams' total. Ruel also led the team in assists with two of her own. Meserve had a team-best of five draw controls,
Ailis Wargin had a team-best of two caused turnovers and
Hannah Holmes had a team-best of two ground balls for Southern Connecticut.
In the first quarter, Southern got off to a quick start towards goal. McIntire had the first goal of the game for the Owls, with an assist by
Morgan Reilly. Then, a minute later,
Amelia Mansfield found the back of the net.
Savannah Feinberg scored a free-position shot, to put the Owls up 3-0 within the first five minutes.
Anna Meserve scored as Ruel assisted with six minutes left in the first period. McIntire scored her second goal of the day and before the quarter was over,
Allie Palmer scored her first of the day for the Owls. Southern Connecticut was up 6-0 over the Eagles after the first quarter.
In the second quarter,
Alexandra Ruel scored her first of the game, to start the Owls' scoring. Post scored three goals within the quarter; however, Southern answered back with three goals of their own.
Allie Welder scored the Owls' eighth goal of the game, with an assist by Mansfield. McIntire would go on score her third and final goal of the day. And right before halftime, Meserve scored another goal, with an assist by
Jordan Fisher, to put Southern up, 10-3 at the break.
In the third quarter,
Abigail Nolan scored the Owls' 11th goal of the game from the free-position. The Eagles put two goals on the board but Southern Connecticut responded with a unassisted goal by
Allie Palmer before the end of the quarter. The Owls had a lead of 12-5 over the Eagles, heading into the fourth.
In the fourth quarter,
Bailey McDermott scored her first of the day then shortly after,
Anna Meserve scored from the free-position. After that,
Allie Welder and
Savannah Feinberg would add two more goals, to extend the Owls' lead to 16-5. Closing out the quarter, McDermott and Nolan would score their second goals of the day. Southern Connecticut finished the game with a victory of 18-5 over Post University.
The Owls will return to action on Wednesday, April 3 at 4:00 p.m. in an NE10 and Elm-City matchup against the University of New Haven at Jess Dow Field in New Haven, Connecticut.
